If the public favors capital punishment, why not mandatory sentencing like they do for drug crimes? You think they'd fry a young, white, rich boy? Or a politician's kid?

You are correct. In his autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero", he says he wanted the war to go one day longer - he never wanted to invade Baghdad.

He and Powell were discussing a cease-fire because of the media stir that arose when journalists began interviewing Air Force pilots who had bombed convoys on Highway 6. Schwartzkopf and Powell both knew that the reports were blown out of proportion, that Iraqis had died there, but most had fled the scene and hand not been killed.

Powell: "So tell me what you want to do".

Schwartzkopf: "So here's what I propose. I want the Air Force to keep bombing those convoys backed up at the Euphrates where the bridges are blown. I want to continue the ground attack tomorrow, drive to the sea, and totally destroy everything in our path. That's the way I wrote the plan for Desert Storm, and in one more day we'll be done."

Powell called back and said: "I'm at the White House. We've been batting around your idea about ending the war at five days. The President is thinking about going on the air tonight at nine o'clock and announcing we're cutting it off. Would you have any problem with that?"

Schwartzkopf: "My gut reaction was that a quick cease-fire would save lives. If we continued to attack through Thursday, more of our troops would get killed, probably not many, but some. What was more, we'd accomplished our mission: I'd just finished telling the American people that there wasn't enough left of Iraq's army for it to be a regional military threat. I'm waving the white flag (surrender, not last lap) on this one. I've tried to find a source to support my original comment qbout Schwarztkopf, BUT I CAN"T!!! Actually, I've been looking on the web for a while and come up with nothing.

I was wrong! Once again, Frank comes up with interesting info. and appears to be a voice of reason in the continuing madness of the BBS.
