When I worked for Schlitz in Boston I was on my way into work when I came upon one of our trucks stuck under a bridge on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. This is the approach to the bridge. Imagine approaching that in a truck with a 12'6" clearance and not knowing you couldn't make it. The top of the cab was almost hitting.
This was a straight job, delivery truck. Something like this but without the reefer unit above the cab.
I just spent a hour watching you tube videos from trucker dash cams. The dumbasses that pull over into you or just stop in front of you ... Or the guy's stopped in traffic, all is still then BOOM, gets plowed into by another truck who obviously wasn't paying attention.
I've seen people on tops of RVs at those bridges to pound on the roof of it as it was going to hit. At the old tunnel there was a booth that a guy would sit in about 100 feet out from the entrance. The over height lights and sirens would go of and this guy would run out of the booth to stop trucks from entering the tunnel waving flags and wearing hi vis stuff. I lived just over the entrance in the North end. Lol sometimes the guy wasn't wick enough and one would wedge in. When I moved to southie, on 1st Street there was a uhaul truck rental place. They used to park the wrecked trucks from memorial drive and storrow drive against the front fence of the place facing the road. In September when all of the new kids got to school, there would always be at least 6 of them parked out there as a warning. I think also as a show of accomplishment in some ways.
Inward,or outward facing,or both? I hated that shit at Cardinal!! They dip in on you,and watch you whenever they liked. After a few repramands ,I told them to stick the camera, and job up thine arse. I didn't get to tell them in the office how to surf facebook, and porn. They shouldn't get to tell me how to drive.
It don't work like that..The lizards have pretty much been exterminated... They still exist, but nothing you would even consider poking.. Some old trailer park chic in her 60's named Barbera, and a cigarette hanging out her mouth, and prison tattoos that were poorly placed.. She washes her vag out in a Texas mudhole between trucks.. Nobody wants to see that on camera..
Yeah, I remember listening to Joe Green on WBZ AM as a kid and hearing about trucks wedged in on Storrow's overpasses. I moved out of the state about when the low-clearance lights were put in. I'm in Mass this week - leaving in a few hours - and honest-to-God, I do not remember everything - roads, houses - being so slow and small, nor did I really remember how tall white pine grows.
The videos with sound are better. You get the drivers WTF's and "it was your fault dumbass" and other choice comments.
I installed one on my own truck a couple of years back. It didn't take long to realize that it inherently made me more careful and less prone to put myself into questionable circumstances. Within the week every truck in my fleet had one.
