You usually have to speak standard to machinists, but personally I hate it. Especially for bearing clearances. It it too wordy, too confusing, plus I think that typically we should use the native measurement system of whoever built the thing. So, If I am working on something Japanese I want millimeters, newtons, and expecially for bearings it is soooo much easier to say, 'oh, that main bearing clearance needs to be 30-35 microns' as opposed to, 'oh that main bearing clearance needs to be 11.8 to 13.7 ten thousands of an inch". Or we could just be a bit less precise and say 1.1 to 1.3 thousandths. For bearings, I just prefer to work in microns. It's metric, its as precise as you can get with a bearing clearance, and it's simple whole numbers... BTW, Tim Radley looks nothing like Austin Powers...he looks more like Jim Carey...on a binge. You told me i looked like a younger and better looking version of yourself but without all the hair products. What else did you lie to me about?
Are you two enjoying yourselves? Tim Radley et al, can you quantify the gains from REM finishing or is it more of a wear reduction / reliability improvement? Some of the links posted earlier seemed to imply a 2% torque gain on a NASCAR engine. I'm assuming the parasitic reduction on a bike motor would be significantly lower what with 8 vs 4 cylinders, pushrods vs OHV, etc.
This has been one of the best threads I've followed in a long time. Kind of like a Christmas extra. Thanks all!
This topic shows that there are grease monkeys (myself included), dream tuners, dremel monkeys, parts sellers, parts installers/sellers (99%). And there are guys like Tim and Ed that are in a hole diferent level.....
I totally agree. There are a few holes on this thread...there are a few that can't even find their own hole. Humblepie can find holes that I didn't even know were there. Can I be a dremel monkey? Rocky Stargel Team Stargel
16:1 compression, that's kinda high! What kind of p-v did you end up with, same goes for p-h? I keep hearing about edr Wss builds but i don't see them listed on his site, do you have a link to these teams/riders.
Can't run them, against the rules. Engines get rebuilt every 8 hours, new valves every 16 hours and completely scrapped every 32 hours so engine life is not one of my concerns on that job
