El Caminos are for posers... 1969 Ford Ranchero GT. 390 4V Automatic. Wanted a project to mess with while I am recuperating and its going to be a while until I can ride a bike so lets see how the car thing works out. I was leaning toward a similar year Torino fastback and my brother is a fan of F-100's so we met in the middle. Dad was a fan of both Rancheros and Ford FE motors so this seems like a fun choice.
Well, I was comparing to the rust bucket in the op, which is old enough to cash social security checks. It's all relative.
Not completely dead. But needed a fair amount of work. I am guilty of driving hard and putting up wet! My bad, but needed transmission rebuild, new tires, pinion seal, u joints, fuel tank dropped cleaned. New fuel pump, new injectors , spark plugs coil packs, new brake calipers pads, rotors, brake flush , cooling flush , supercharger oil service, supercharger coolant service, new shocks , some replacement of bumpers, bushings and other wore out front end parts. And some other stuff my mechanic/ buddy found. Again my bad for not driving but got to a point needed a fair amount of love/$ and kept putting off?! Wife and I have been having health issues for a couple years now , so now doing.
I like it. Factory four barrel? Most of them came with a very reliable motorcraft two barrel. Plan on 9 mpg on the highway.
Some what, my wife has two more treatments and hopefully they let her ring the bell!! But I’m still recovering from c,5,6,7 neck surgery, tomorrow is 3 weeks. I go see my dr in two weeks and hopefully lets me take this torture device off my neck and lets me start doing something ! Praying my wife can stay C free!! It’s been a difficult couple years.
According to the tags and VIN it came with the 4V. My dad was a big fan of the FE motors so I know all to well the lack of MPG. In fact the first motor I ever assembled (with his help and guidance)at the ripe old age of 10 was a 390. Started looking into options for upgrading to FI and modern Ignition as well as options for overdrive. This should be a fun project.
My old friend that was a die hard Ford guy, always ran Carter afb carbs . All his mustangs, ranchero and Fairlane had them.
I was actually writing the question in the other thread when Dave made it disappear: why did they need to be fused? p.s. weird fact: I owned a 2000 Lightning when my C4/C5/C6 were fused.
I haven't messed with a ford since the early 90's but back then I was a Holley guy. I got away from cars except for basic transportation for a long time, but my recent mobility issues along with helping to resto mod a 50 Chevy truck (5.3 LS) and a 70 charger with a 440 adapted with a Holley throttle body system have be leaning towards FI. I am hoping that the motor in the truck is a 390. A few odd quirks have me believing it is not the original one and if it's not a 390 or is beyond repair I may look into other options.
That is weird?! I have for years been having issues with my neck . Past year has got progressively worse. So went to my spine and neurosurgeon here in San Antonio and got a MRI. He looked at it and said I was a candidate for surgery but wanted to try other stuff first. I was already seeing a massage therapist and a chiropractor, also an acupuncture specialist. So then decided to see my old orthopedic surgeon in Houston and get a second opinion. He said no more treatment you need surgery! After surgery Dr told my wife the c6 part he pulled out was gelatinous and not right. So now have some hardware connecting c5,6,7.
