They are not selling well over here. Still 2023 models on the showroom floors, with heavy discounts. Why is that ? I think it looks pretty cool and performance seems astounding...
I think it's because it doesn't necessarily compete in a typical segment. It's hard to judge it or comparison test it when ti stands a bit on its own.
1. Overpriced at full MSRP. 2. Ergos are full blown sport bike - far too aggressive for its target audience of 35-55 year olds. I almost bought one that had a $6500 discount on it last Fall - love the look and performance is great but it’s a torture rack.
My take: When I was shopping for a street bike I had narrowed my choices to the 2023 Triumph Speed Triple RR and the 2023 Yamaha XSR900. The Triumph had a lot going for it. The fit and finish is outstanding, loved the looks and the Ohlins electronically controlled suspension. IMO worth the price. But... at my age, looking for a comfortable street bike, the Triumph lost out big time in the ergonomics. The clip ons were too low and aggressive for the street for me. When I looked at the bike, my assessment was that a set of bar risers was a no go due to the fairing design. The Yamaha had good looks, nice fit and finish, complete electronic rider aides, much better ergonomically, and a much more attractive price. Where the XSR900 fell way short was in the suspension. That was fixable and is much better now (correct springs, aftermarket shock and fork re-valve). Pic of the bike as it is now.
My Thruxton R is similarly uncomfortable and they sold tons of them. I guess it's more niche. What doesn't help the RR over here is the fact they are considered super Sport like Gsx-Rs and CBRs and you pay the highest rate for insurance.
I rode my thruxton r from baltimore to the Canadian border and Niagara like a year ago. it was great. courier bag with what I needed and let it rip. great trip. the clipons on the fairing models are bit lower. but the risers work even with the fairing. though they don't really look right. I love my thruxty.
The RR is ....weird. I love the idea of it and I'm honestly looking for a used Speed Triple RS model right now. The reach on the RR is what put me off and the height while OK for track use, just doesn't feel right. A lot of weight on your hands. The RS version IMO looks great, Ohlins that can be revalved or resprung easily and a motor that makes over 170 with a tune. The only issue I am aware of is crappy OEM shift sensors. And...there is a teaser that new model is coming out that is supposedly the RS, with Ohlins 3.0 suspension, steering damper, etc. Ken edit for pic -
They are great Street bikes, until you try to do street bike things with them, then the riding position is terrible, there is absolutely no where to store anything and the ergonomics suck.
Do you remember the 99+ Ducati Supersports? This is kinda that bike, but newer. Looks great. Great engine. Nice spec. Terrible ergos, not a real sportbike, no clear position in the market and too high production to be a collectible. Because of that, it sits in a liminal space in the buyer's mind = low sales.
Someone was rocking one of these at the GNF and looked fast as fuck to me and sounded pretty great. They haven't been on my radar because....Triumph
Definitely cool, but I can't see buying one over a regular Speed Triple for road use. I had an 09 Speed Triple back in the day and loved most things about it. The newer 1200 is supposed to fix the things that were crap about the old one - the engine's unwillingness to rev quickly, the gearbox that was kinda crap, not enough forward weight bias for good front end feel relative to modern stuff etc...The 09 was still great though. Then Ducati came out with the original SF1098 and I was hooked.
