Now that I got your attention... What do the fastest Experts modify on their SS bikes? Skill goes a long way, but what else are they doing? Just curious...
Suspension, then track time, then maps - I understand. But to build a motor to SS spec would seem like a waste? No?
exactly until your running top 3 then it might play into the equation. i would concentrate on a good tune which will help out a lot and then put the money into the suspension.
On a 600, a good supersport build will get about 20 horsepower at the rear wheel over a stock OEM motor. Of course a pipe, power commander + mapping, and race fuel alone might get you half that. But that still leaves you with 10 more ponies to find. As a novice who can't even use what a stock bike provides, those 10 extra ponies won't help you much. Hell, I know plenty of mid pack 600 expert riders who get on SV's and turn the same exact lap time as they did on their 600. And I know plenty of SV guys who jump on 600's and turn the same times as they did on their SV. For the vast majority of us, horsepower isn't what determines our lap times. It's some combo of an inadequate supply of skill and courage preventing us from achieving motogp glory. But if you want to win a 600SS race as an expert, even at the WERA level, you should probably be packin' some heat in that motor. A guy with a built motor won't have to ride "on the edge" nearly as much as a guy with a stock motor, to turn the same lap time. But yeah, what everyone else said is right. Spend money on track time, tires, and suspension first. Then when you're only getting passed on the straights, start investing in motor.
I have been under the impression that a rebuilt engine (whether to stock or SS specs) will be more reliable than an engine fresh off the showroom floor. Of course that assuming you have a good engine builder that pays more attention to detail than the factory. Am I wrong?
Depends on who you talk to I think. Having a good engine builder go through your motor isn't a bad thing by any stretch but if you're talking budget then it should be way down on the list.
Thanks, you've pretty much answered my question exactly. I've been playing with budget numbers for a return to racing next year, and unless I see a radical shift in income, there will be a lot of prioritizing. One thing that would be much higher on the list this time around is the tire budget. I don't know how many tires the fast experts use now days, but I'm sure it's more than the one set a weekend I used to try to get away with as a fast novice.
Not if you want to win. This is true to an extent. The clearances will all be correct so it will last longer, but will make more compression so the fuse will be shorter. In the end int should balance out for a club motor.
good but backwards......... suspension, tracktime, then tune, then if you really have to....motor work like Mongo said, 98% of riders in WERA dont Need it...............it wouldnt hurt but its not going to instantly make you finish top 3 in an Expert race either
The ability to turn off your brain and hit WOT before anyone else is worth it's weight in gold.. Too bad they don't bottle it and sell it. Oh yeah, and that whole not crashing thing as a suuplement.
Shhhhh!!!! Do you mean the top secret ceramic muffler bearings, or only the ones that have been coated????
