Nope, used to don't anymore. Once you hit 65 the county doesn't charge property tax anymore. I first found out a year or so ago, went to the PVA office and actually got a refund for the previous couple of years.
Nice! Texas has an over 65 exemption on your homestead of $100K, but that will only reduce our bill by ~$2140/year. We'd still owe well more than I made in my first year on active duty in the military. And rental properties have no exemptions. Annualized, between property taxes, insurance, and management fees I don't make a dime on rentals until late May. IF nothing breaks. Maybe I should buy a meme coin.
Some of them big ass buildings they built sure are. Both condos and high risers and all are fairly new. I remember way back the 55 was the tallest back in the late 80's . Now there's a heap of them down there.
I settled in Treasure Island(St. Pete/Clearwater area) almost 6 years ago because I fell in love with the area and the town. We have Airbnb units on the island as well. We got hit hard by the hurricanes, but are rebuilding. My wife and I are both realtors in the area. Happy to have a chat if you’re willing to consider the west coast at all. Shoot me a PM if you want. Some great deals out right now if you’re a cash buyer because of the hurricane damage. I’m confident that everything will bounce back better than ever though.
Treasure Island is the sweet spot of that stretch. Mostly residential, but with just enough bars and restaurants to have fun and keep entertained. I love it there. We stayed in a condo building right beside Publix on Gulf Blvd. We bought an hour north of there to be closer to friends and family, but I would've happily resided in Treasure Island.
Port Saint Lucie is insane. Prices are ridiculous and traffic is even worse. Snowbirds keep coming and staying to the point that it has become NY 2.0 We are actually looking at property in Alabama just to get out of here and put distance between neighbors. The Tradition area and Saint Lucie West is turning into another Boca Raton.
So explain why paying property tax means you don't own the land? Are you insinuating that you're "renting" the land from the govt?
I don't have teeth. I mean, there are teeth in my mouth and I chew with them, but they're not mine. If I stop bushing them, they'll rot and fall out. That's what you sound like. You own land, and the government wants taxes paid on that ownership. You don't want to pay them? They'll conveniently sell the land for you to help cover those costs.
