Damn! He should've been in the hall of fame in his lifetime. Compared to the nonsense that goes on these days his transgressions were of no impact.
I guess rules are rules but Rose should be in the HOF. Just my opinion of course. Rip Charlie Hustle.
That's the best baseball player in our lifetime. RIP Pete I'm glad I got to see him play many times, the Big Red Machine of the 70s was one of the best teams ever.
My mom used to take us to Reds games back in the 70's when the machine was rolling so I was a huge fan. My Pete Rose story...my step uncle, who I'm still close to, married Pete's first cousin. This was in 74 and I was in the wedding, and the big talk was that Pete was showing up to the wedding. Of course Pete doesn't come to the wedding. For those too young to know, Pete was the Jordan of baseball back then, a super star. And word was he was a bit of a dick, but whatever. Forward to 2005, wife and I are in Vegas walking the stores in the Venetian. There in a little shop sat Pete Rose, signing baseballs for $100 a pop. And nobody was in the store. I just peeked in and saw the desperation. Yeah, he got screwed major league. Whether or not he actually bet on his own team, who knows, but enough time had passed. He'll always be Charlie Hustle to me, although I was always a bigger Joe Morgan fan.
After watching the HBO series on him. He was his own worst enemy. His ego/ignorance is what kept him out of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Sad loss to his family, and the community that revered him.
He was every time I met him - I also saw him in Vegas signing stuff but never went in to talk to him. The current GM of MLBs bullshit excuse for not letting him in is actually annoying to me - he thinks that even after being booted from baseball Pete shouldn't have ever placed another bet and him doing so legally means he didn't learn his lesson. What a fucking crock of shit.
Met him multiple times, he was a pure asshole every time without fail. Last time I saw him was in the Ceasar's Palace shopping mall. My good freind (whom I was with when we witnessed hit number 4192 at Riverfront Stadium) demanded that we go and see him. He was sitting alone at a table selling autographs for $20 each, and when my buddy told him that we were at the game together he looked at us said "oh". Total asshole move. Needless to say that my buddy decided right then and there to get a new hero. Can't say as I blame him. He was a great baseball player but also his own worst enemy.
I believe a couple of guys were kicked out of the NBA this year for gambling, so no. I wouldn't say he was ahead of his time.
Wasn't there someone suspended for gambling on a different team nor even sport in recent past? If not an NBA player, a football player?
A'ight, I went to AI: https://apnews.com/article/nfl-gambling-suspensions-titans-colts-665e6da82f5975ad17a62ef8ac945c90 "The NFL had on a suspended five players for gambling in its entire history before the 2023 off-season. However, that number skyrocketed to 15 after the recent investigations and suspensions."
