A lot of work I'm aware of was done in direct response to the female (intersex?) olympian from South Africa. The findings as I have read them indicate that there are perceptible gender differences in genitalia (obviously), brain, and DNA. I assume if your DNA or brain gender don't match your genitals, it makes things a tad confusing from the get go.

 

I didn't know the guy she defeated was one of the main guys behind the "bathroom bill", makes it even better!
