Hey @Boman Forklift are you okay out there? Posting volume has dropped precipitously since yesterday. Let us now come up please.
My buddy's house is in Rancho Cucamonga he's taken a beating from the winds and the fires are growing. Complete shit show.
The fires are terrible for the people in those specific areas, but the rest of LA is business as usual. Yes it's windy, but nothing unseen before. I work in Santa Monica and you can see the Palisades hills on fire, but here aside from the sky being dark from the smoke, it's pretty regular. Rob lives far away from all this and his shop is South of downtown LA that's also pretty far from any of this. I'm sure he's doing fine and probably sleeping off his red-eye delivery commute to Norcal.
I work about 15 miles up the coast from Malibu and I can see the massive amounts of smoke from the office. It's a big one, much bigger and more destructive than the one that claimed our house back in November.
I just got a text from a beeb member to get on here. Actually just been busy today. We are fine. I live a long way south of the fire and my work is about 5-6 miles from downtown LA, so I can't imagine it would ever make it here at work. Having said that, there is a strong smell of smoke and when I crossed the river today to go to eat lunch, I couldn't see very far towards downtown LA and can't see the mountains like normal. Quite smokey. Thank you everyone for your concern, but we are good here. Best wishes to the families that are losing their places or being evacuated.
Man, sorry to hear you lost your house. I live down in Mission Viejo, which is probably at least 60 miles from any of these fires, but we have had a few that were only a few miles away. So far we have been lucky and we don't live right up against those forest land areas, but a few miles away, however when things start blowing around, who knows? Last night when I was driving home from work, I was getting blown around pretty good and a couple times across into another lane by 6-12 inches. I did hear on the radio, that out by Fontana there were Semi trucks that were parked and blown over while trying to wait the wind out.
Weather reports winds were 60-100 mph the last two nights, will drop to 15-30 tonight, then 10ish. Those strong winds are impossible to fight, embers go miles and start spot fires. We had the same thing in 2020, just in less populated areas
Too bad about the fires; I can remember the Santa Ana wind blowing all the crud in the air up the coast. You could look up at the San Gabriels and imagine what it was like there in the 20's and 30's.
Went to a buddies house last night in Altadena to play firewatch so he could a few hours sleep before he had to do it all over again today
Any update on buddies place? I’m in HB and from what I’m seeing AltaDena is smoked. Hope he’s upwind of the fires. I thought our solar panels were gonna cut loose off the house last night. if he has any bikes, etc that need a garage for a bit I’ll park in the driveway and he can put them in garage if he needs. Kids may knock them over but I’ll do my best to keep them away.
Papa, I thought this was about welfare money and not his well being. Glad you're good Rob, the rest of y'all stay safe, you are in our thoughts.
I live in Pasadena right up against Altadena. Most everyone we know has evacuated and many friends already had their houses burn down, but escaped with their lives. Many local businesses and commercial centers have also burned down completely. My place is under warning to evacuate but not a directive. The water is undrinkable as of a few hours ago, air is unbreathable without a gas mask, all schools closed or burned down anyway so we said F this and left SoCal entirely. Pacific Palisades looks totally fucked, now Hollywood Hills burning down too. Wildfires are nothing new, but I’ve never seen them extend this far into the more urbanized portions of town. I know a few folks who’ve evaced and returned to hose their shit down. Seems to help. Though if I had a house up there I might get a damned pump and a serious hose instead of that garden hose shit. Hopefully your buddy’s place makes it. Several hundred homes are confirmed destroyed already, once it’s all done and we get accurate numbers I’ll bet it’s into the thousands of structures. Could be a quarter of the buildings in town easy.
Wow @SGVRider never realized you were here in So Cal. Glad you guys got out, sorry to hear about your friends. Seeing the fires come so far into urban areas has surprised us too. Last night after my wife heard a small one started by Laguna Niguel, she wanted to pack some important stuff, which we did. First time I’ve ever prepped for a fire. Fortunately by us the winds were not that bad yesterday and last night, compared to the first day of the fires.
A friend from high school lives in Santa Monica on Amalfi Dr just off Sunset, from what I could tell on google maps his house is south and east of where the fires are but I sent him a text anyway to see if he's ok. He said he thinks the house is ok but the bad part is the family moved out temporarily due to a home renovation. They rented a place on Charmel Lane where the fires are and all their belongings are in the rental. They evacuated and he doesn't know if the rental is still standing or not.
those of us waiting on the liquidation of KTM inventory ews were worried there was a Jewish Lightning Fire Sale
