New Project Race Bike

    Alright guys, its kinda offseason and I have been wanting to do a cool retro-type racer.

    So heres the starting bike:

    2019 Triumph Scrambler
    90-100 hp
    Planning to do the headwork, camshafts etc to try to get around 120 hp at the wheel.

    Goal is to race in Super Hooligans and WERA/AHRMA Twins classes or where legal.
    I also have a 900 engine that will bolt in when/where necessary.

    So the scrambler has like a million degrees of angle in the swingarm so Kent at GMD is gonna shorten and revalve the stock Ohlins Piggybacks for Road Racing. The only downfall is that the stock ohlins are not adjustable for ride height so worst case, Ill upgrade if needed.

    The front end wont work at all obviously, so with the streetbike geometry, which I need to do some math we are going to get adjustable triples and get the geometry hopefully close to be handling well.
    Forks and front wheel will be from a Daytona 675R and with all my shit, I dont have any spare forks so ill have to source those.

    I am gonna try to find a salvage thruxton tank and seat section to give the classic cafe lines which I want to keep. I want this to look like it came from caldwell park in the 60's and 70's so I also have an old fairing from one of the Seeley Nortons I raced so hopefully that will mock up ok.

    Rear wheel luckily I can fit a speed twin rear wheel into the stock scrambler swingarm so keeping triumph parts is cool.

    It's been a minute since I have built something road race cool, so I figured, now is the time.

    Sounds killah!

    Is it legal for the class? I know Indians, Ducatis, Harleys and ebikes are legal but no idea on triumphs.

    Well, technically the rules, the only thing legal from triumph is the scrambler due to handlebars and 2 cylinders.

    A brief look at the "rules" I can fine seems to only indicate that:
    "Open to all manufacturers of motorcycles. Water cooled or air-cooled 750cc+ twin cylinder, American Air-cooled V-Twin and Electric divisions all racing head-to-head in the same class on the same grid. "

    It ships with normal bars, it's bigger than 750cc, it has two cylinders, and it doesn't claim more than 125hp at the brochure, sounds legal to me. Just bear in mind when doing the motor side of the build to pay attention to the restrictions on non American Air-cooled machines, and don't slip under the minimum weight. So far I love the idea, and there were a few people on MA's facebook posts wondering why there were no Triumphs in the class. The rules are poorly written and don't say SH machines need rain lights or fuel tank foam, THEY DO, tech is enforcing it, so just an FYI.

    Hell yes. This sounds like a fun project!! Can't wait to see it on track.


    Question is...are YOU going to be the Hooligan riding it?

    Cool idea. I think the fairing is no bueno though:


    2.7.10.11 Fairing / Bodywork a. No upper fairing or windscreen allowed b. RSD Super Hooligan number plate required c. A lower catch/belly pan must be constructed to hold, in case of an engine breakdown, at least half of the total oil and engine coolant capacity used in the engine (min. 5 liters water-cooled/ 2.5 liters air-cooled).

    Only fairing would be if I entered AHRMA/WERA or trackdays and display. I know no fairings in Hooligans.

    That would be the original plan. If the bike is good and I am not then i'll get some hotshoe on it. I wanna win.

    I have a speed twin aluminum swing arm in good shape. Should be shorter and bolt up to what you have. I was going to use it on a Hooligan street twin but went with a older bike

    That stuff is in the main rulebook and applies to all machines. Caliper safety wiring, etc

    I think the scrambler arm is a little longer and going that route first. The front geometry will be my starting point (well, Kent at GMD that is). I really need to source a Daytona front end, and Thruxton tank. Some stuf on Ebay, but I am trying to kinda keep a friendly budget.

    Lotta peeps stopped by to check it out already. Right now its just an engine and frame. healtech does offer a scrambler specific plug and play QS so wont have to rig up a thruxton unit.

    So, actually, 2.3.4 which covers all machines fails to mention fuel tank foam or rain safety lights. Those two items are only mentioned in the class specific sections, and not in the SuperHooligan doc either. This caused some warnings this weekend at COTA, I chatted a bit about it with the techs 'cause by the book as written, SH bikes are not required to have them. They're aware, and said the SH rulebook is poorly written, fair, but ya know, there are ways to fix it... The proposed 2024 MA rulebook doesn't correct the issue, I've submitted a request to fix it by including those items in 2.3.4 to eliminate the ambiguity.

    Looking at brake options while I wait on the rear wheel from England, and as stated I am planning to run the Daytona 675 Ohlins, and I already have a new pair of Brembos from that model, which I have never felt I needed more brakes.

    That being said, brembo has the newer style calipers like on Panigale and some of the higher end euro models the M50. Other than newer looking and prob a little better, are there any reasons to buy a pair? Im not Broome, but for those that have used them both, are the new ones that much better for this level of bike? If they are worlds better then Ill get a set off ebay froma pani, otherwise ill stick with the stock Daytona brembos

    Looks like there might be a small (6% or so) weight savings depending on which units you have now, also note the piston sizes may be different, M50s are 30mm, many older Brembos are 34mm so match the master to the caliper. I say go GP4-MS but… you do you. :D

    I don't know the diameter of the steering stem on the Scrambler, but with almost 26* of rake and 120mm+ of ground trail, you're gonna need some wildly offset bearings to get that into 'sportbike range'. Can't wait to see what you come up with though.
    Regarding the brakes, there's very little difference in m4 vs m50, just remember to size the m/c correctly, the caliper piston sizes are different.

    The Speed Twin and Thruxton also seem to fit that description. They are technically similar, at least engine wise.

    Sounds like a real cool project, good luck and yeah, post some goddamn pics ! :D

    I'm so disconnected from modern triumphs, but that's a great point. And at least geometrically, the Speed Twin is MUCH closer to what you'd want on a circuit vs a Scrambler
