Okay, I need to find a new knife. The kid stole my Spyderco and my POS backup is dangerous.

I looked at a Spyderco Centofante and the blade length and body was good but I didn't like the handle.

I know little about folding knives so, help me. No serrated blades.

    Benchmark good?

People love to shit on Benchmade but part of me wonders how much that's just people loving to hate the popular kid. I've had 3 that have been put through years of use and have served me quite well. I also like We Knife Co and their more mid-grade brand, Civivi, seems to offer a ton of value. CRKT also up there for value. The Italian brands make some really nice stuff but they don't seem to hold up as well over time in my experience.

    Benchmade is great. Pro-tech too.

Get a bugout or griptilian for EDC and be happy.

They're a pita to sharpen due to the steel, but hold an edge well.

I lost my automatic Pro-Tech lefty. Am still sad 4 years later.

Oh yea somehow forgot about my Pro-Tech. Thing is fuckin sweet though it’s my suit knife, not an EDC. Though based on Dave’s post history, he ain’t dropping coin on one of those lol.

Not sure I can agree with your assessment on sharpening though. Go sharpen some Italian M390 or the like and get back to me.

Quentin, I'll spend a bit since I tend to keep shit like this for decades (the Spyderco was ~ 30 years old) but I don't want to spend a fortune. Most bang for my bucks.

I am used to the thumb hole deployment of the Spyderco.

I really like the locking mechanism on Demko knives.

If you want to stick with the spyderhole, paramilitary 2, or I like the tenacious since I tend to lose/break shit - they're imported and cheaper, and do require more sharpening.

Kershaw Iridium is a good cross lock version similar cheaper option to Benchmade Griptilian. I just can't adapt to the cross lock opening/tip down carry, i'm too old.

Kersahw liner locks are best bang for buck in my opinion right now. Leek for small, not sure what's out there for larger ones nowadays.

If you really do like Spyderco, the Paramilitary (in all its iterations) is still one of the best selling knives of the last decade and I knew a few dudes who have and love them. I never cared to learn the Spydey flick so I've never owned one but I'm sure they're a solid option.

If you're interested in an auto, Pro-tech is the way to go in my opinion. Phenomenal action and great quality.

I usually carry a Kershaw 1605cktst it runs just under $50 and has about a 3" blade. The only part I don't like is that the back part of the blade is serrated. However, that part of the blade isn't used very much by me and the serrations have been useful the few times I wanted it. I guess it doesn't bother me enough to look for something else.

I've got a few Benchmades; they're well made knives. I prefer slim folders, so I have the 940 variants and a 943. The 943 is all black (blade and scales). The 943 is discontinued, so maybe it'll be worth a few bucks down the road? I recently got an Ocaso Solstice. It's a great office/gentleman's knife; i.e. nice and slim. It's an Andrew Demko design, so you know it's good. I went thought a phase where I carried larger knives like the PM2, Manix, Adamas, etc. I really can't use them at work. I work in an office and people would freak out if I pulled out one of those. Besides, they were/are overkill for what I need a knife to do on a daily basis. One of my favorites right now is my Spyderco Chaparrel in Birdseye maple. It's a very classy looking knife. My other daily carry knives are a Buck 55, 503, 501; Spyderco Lil' Native, Chaparral Sun & Moon, BM 940, and a small SAK.

It's fun to read everyone's knife favorites. I have way too many, and have carried one daily since my teenage years. I think it's a bit like blue jeans: just cause one fits you doesn't mean your buddy will care for it. That said, here are what I tend to reach for in the morning. Top to bottom: Benchmade 710, Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Protech TR-3, and the one I most reach for, Chris Reeve Sebenza Insingo.

The 710 is big in the pocket when I'm driving, Spyderco charges me a heavy closed length for such a small blade, the Protech is lovely but doesn't have the build quality and fit/finish of a Chris Reeve. The Sebenza has to be carried and used to be believed. Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary. Cheers! [IMG]

I lost one of these hunting. Crawling through briars uphill to get to a field from a downwind side.

My father gave it to me on my 18th. When my son turned 18 I wanted to get him one and that's when I found out they were no longer made. I found one in Japan that was NOS. I gave it to him and told him the story of mine.

Does anybody edc a fixed blade? I like the convenience, but I am concerned about how it appears to the general public.

Hard to beat a Leek for EDC. Not too big, not too small, good quality but well under $100. The bead blasted aluminum scales are surprisingly grippy. Really lots of great options from Kershaw, but the Leek is a great all rounder.

When I was in my “large knife” phase, I had several 710s; they’re fantastic knives. I had one with the same scales as those. There are a lot of great custom scales for the mighty 710.

I bought two Emerson knives around 6 years ago (i think). The build quality was great but the edge of the knife was extremely disappointing.

He did give a nice LEO discount but even with that very disappointing .

I also bought his book about sharpening knives and it was a complete waste of money. If you have ever sharpened a knife you won’t learn anything. lol
