Spent $700 on parts- removed that AFM junk from my chevy 5.3. AND threw a new oil pick up o-ring at it. Thing will run forever now. You couldn't pay me to drive any Ford. My neighbors 17 F150 has seen the auto repair shop more than people visit whataburger in Texas.
I would cut bait and run on a eco post with those issues. If it was a deal where you could resolve that problem and be good for another 150k it would be one thing, but more than likely there are more problems on the horizon for that truck. Problems that aren’t cheap to resolve suck as Turbos, bottom end issues and more.
Thanks guys . I appreciate the input . I’m calling the guy that introduced me to the beeb maybe 18-19 years ago and gonna start looking for something
Agree with this. I had a 2012 of the same truck, changed the oil every 3500 miles. Loved that truck, strong engine and good transmission. Never had any turbo issues. I was at 175k when a 16 yr old pulled out in front of me. I'm in a road salt area also so rust was becoming an issue.
I know it ain't a 1/2t, but I've been quite happy with my F350 7.3 XLT so far(only 12k in). It's a relatively simple(for these days) truck and with the aluminum body I shouldn't have any rust issues. Got my fingers crossed that it'll last me 20 years like my '01 Dodge Cummins did.
Aren't cam phasers just a symptom of a bigger oil sludging issue that forces you to replace the motor in the end? Or is that just on the 5.4? I would think for not a ton more you could just put a new long block in... If you're strickly talking about saving money keeping what you got makes the most sense. I don't understand how people can sit there and say that buying a new vehicle and taking the huge depreciation hit is a better finacial decision than spending a few grand over the next couple of years on a used vehicle. And if you buy used, you just might be buying somebody else's problem.
Cam phasers and the timing chain system are a weak link in a sketchily engineered system. Improper maintenance can lead to premature failure, but failure is inevitable. Source: the bad (original) phasers on my ‘06 with 290k miles. I always have at least two vehicles. For the pittance the insurance costs, the peace of mind knowing if one decides to go tits up won’t put me in a bind for getting the kids around is well worth it.
i changed my ecoboost oil with full synth every 5k. i guess that didn't help Anyone heard transmission issues with chevy? Going to look at 2021 trail boss w/ 5.3
The automatics most companies make these days are always suspect. Does this come with the 10speed? Be a little wary of the 10speed. That was a joint design with Ford and there are lots of complaints on the Ford side...not as much on the Chevy side. Not sure if its parts production or tuning, but chevy seems to last a little better. I would do a lot of research before buying a 10speed. If its an 8speed...the newer 8 speeds 19+ i think had some changes and are supposedly better.
My 1995 Chevy K2500 plow truck is a Zombie, it refuses to die. It's rusting as I sit here typing this...I can hear it! I've replaced the frame mounted cab support towers, actually cobbled up ones out of scrap steel I had lying around. Now the frame mounted spring support(s) are flaking into a rust pile on the barn floor. The interior door latch was made out of pot metal so that got tossed out the window...have to roll the window down and open the door from the outside. The drive train has never given me a hint of trouble. The truck and I are in an endurance challenge to see who will croak first....
35K barely broke in I remember back in the day I went to a used car buying seminar. Dude said...find and talk to the previous owner. If they traded up cause they buy a new vehicle every 3 years then go for it but if it gave them fits and they unloaded it buyer beware Have the thing taken to the mechanic of your choice and run a full diagnostic.
Good luck with that, if you live where they brine, salt the roads, or near salt water, the aluminum will corrode. Not to mention the different metals and their "mitigation" efforts to prevent galvanic corrosion. A bit different than rust but, it still will corrode under the paint, and look as bad or worse... and like rust, there is no fixing it, once it starts. Fluid film, Woolwax, or Surface shield, for the win. once every fall, prior to the first snow. Coat errrrythang except the brakes and tires. Ski
Do you tow much or often? A cousin has a 17 GMC 5.3 4x4 truck same as mine. His 6L80 blew up early this year with ~80-100K on it. But he does construction and tows a lot. I said it when I bought mine and since...the LS is great but the dam AFM/DOD and the trannys can cause an issue. Also the oil oring but you should see that in oil pressure. If you can mitigate or dodge those issues you should be good for 200k plus. I am at 155k and ate a lifter at 95K...did the work and now have 60k miles and only issue is fuse box related...couple hundred to fix.
