Well after much deliberation. I have chosen to go with a 2008+ WR250X and going to have a spare set of "R" brakes and rims. After looking at XR650R's set up for the street, KLR's and DZ's. I have settled on a WR. Well what I am planning on doing with the bike is be able to load the bike up and just go. So it will be outfitted with a rack and some soft bags. Not go for a month or anything.... Yet.. But be able to do a weekend or 5 day ride or something. Maybe try my hand at some Hare scrambles. Just for the experience of it. I would also like to try some Rallys. Why a WR250 you ask? Well I figure it like this, I have already owned a DZR400 and saw how fast that was. Owned a 650R for a brief period of time, saw how fast and heavy that was. Never owned or ridden a KLR or DZ but figure they will both be piggy versions of the 250 compromising one thing or another. I think the hardest thing will be making the WR road worthy for a trip over 200-300 miles. But that would be on the road. Where it will do 80mph. But on trails and what not where are you going to go 80?? It weighs 279 wet stock, as a comparison a YZ250F weighs 250 wet stock. So I figure with a pipe and taking some bullshit off I may be able to get it down to about 260 or so. Not bad. Well the other reason for this bike rather than the others would be the weight in the technical areas. I would rather a smaller bike and have been addicted to reading Ride Reports on the ADV riders site. Looking at some of the threads I reallllly want to make a ride to Colorado. Oh and I sat there reading this damn RR for 3 hours..... Weird dude for sure but I admire his balls to go out into the unknown. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=730691 Thoughts?
If shit hits the fan, and you are on a wr250, Im chasing you down easily in something because you picked a turd...... Street legal ktm 530 please Lots of reliable ponies, estart, on and off road
MB G63 AMG. G550 if I can't get one of those. One tap of my bumper on your weiner bike and it Looks like I got myself some gasoline eh.
Any dual sport I've ever owned I always called these guys http://www.sargentcycle.com/ They sell their foam separately so you can build your own seats if you don't want to drop the coin for a complete one. Makes them all day comfortable. Super Cell foam it's called, awesome stuff.
Damn it. I saw that after it was too late to edit it. Oh and my the KTM is out of the price range of $3500.
Awesome. I'll defintely look into them. I've heard of them for street bikes. Not offroadsy enough. I looked at those but would be too heavy for what I would want it for.
Don't plan on doing 80 on a WR. I put about 300 miles on one a few weeks back. Sucks balls on the highway. It held its on in the woods though, even with a shitty semi knobby stock tire. I think the KTM530 would be a great choice if you could afford one. I am thinking bmw gs800 if I had the coin. if not klr or dr for road and easy dirt road riding.
Oh I'm not planning on riding much highway. I did that on the DRZ400 and that wasn't much fun either. But I think this would be a good beginner trails/enduro bike. My question would be. Why if I can't do 80 in the trails would I want a bigger heavier bike to go off roading on?
hmmm well since this is the mad max scenario your gonna need speed dependability and range, and possibly room for a passenger to fire the guns at the chasers. triple digits both on road and off well im biased on this but ill take a ktm adv s with long range safari tanks, side bags to carry the food and ammo, a roto plax or 2 to carry more fuel. others that would fit bmw gs 1150, 1200 something maybe the 800. or a xr 600 or 650 the little bike might work if your in a highly mountainous terrain where a small bike would be a better ideal, but for the landscape that was in the movies the bigger bike with more speed would be ready.
I love their work but goddamn do they charge a shit load of money for upholstry work. They recovered a stepped seat I made myself. Charged me $89. Returned a few months later with the exact thing... they wanted $179. Im glad I asked prior to leaving it. :wow:
