    Serious question. Why?

    Maybe to someday lay the foundation for an off-planet launching pad for longer trips? Supposedly, the moon dust is an insurmountable hurdle for any construction or habitation.

    Space laser base so we can whack the new Russian nuclear satellite-killing weapons?

    Seems like the funds for the "We did it again, sorta" project would be better spent elsewhere.

    Well, it is a private venture, so there's that. But I suspect it was heavily subsidized.
