Okay, what do these dealerships do in the case of their lower cost items like a CRF50, Grom, TTRS and the like? Some might accept some bullshit with a Grom because they’re stupid but who is going to take $200 to $500 on top of sticker for a $3400 motorcycle?
I was thinking about KTMs in particular because MV Agusta also recently added the Enduro Veloce (developed pre- PMG). That bike requires a lot more time and effort to assemble than say a Brutale 800. The Brutale comes put together minus mirrors that are super easy / quick to install. The Enduro Veloce comes with all kinds of parts removed and boxed and packed all around the bike because it takes up so much space they have to disassemble a lot of parts to safely fit inside the crate. I would imagine some of the bigger KTMs are shipped the same way with their smaller dirtbikes / SM / and small sportbikes like the 390 arriving essentially ready. I would assume other dealers also adjust their PDI / Prep costs per bike since one can be 30min and another can be 4 hours.
Why wouldn't that cost just be factored into the MSRP? Fuck it, I'm gonna start selling a cardboard box with 3000 loose parts in it. MSRP is $5,000, but the assembly charge is another $5,000
It's not a bait and switch. Because @kenessex says so. After dealing with a honest dealer, which is exactly what we're NOT talking about here. Anyways, I digress.
I went to buy a brand new GROM this summer. MSRP was $3600, but OTD was over $5,000. So, I decided that what I really wanted was a lightly used GROM instead.
Thanks, that tells me what I wanted to know. Dealerships think people have no other option and will accept an ass packing. spring I’m looking for a scooter and a fuck about motorcycle. Sounds like used is my world but that was the scooter anyways since I wanted a stink wheeler.
because the dealer model is inherently a little shady despite what anyone wants to say, being objective. I recently bought a new Tiguan and the delivery cost is included in the MSRP, yet for Powersports it’s usually not. It’s just a way of hiding some of the sticker shock, anyone arguing against that is lying. as for bait and switch there definitely are California dealers that do that, I’ve seen it first hand. Some will just give you OTD price, that’s how I got my kx250 and my ZX6R, price was settled before I even drove there
the little kids dirtbikes have almost no margin in them, it’s kind of insane. It’s true they really do only make like $100-200 on some of those little models
I walked out the door with a Trail 125 for like 4300 I think it was a couple of months ago from Southern Honda. I don’t think there were any Fee’s tagged on but who knows. I asked a price and paid.
I bought a Closeout FE501S from Pandoras in Chattanooga a few months ago. OTD with tax tag and Title was 11840 on a 9999 bike. I felt like that was reasonable as tax and tag was 750 or so. No real difference between that and any of the other new bikes I’ve bought. Shipping and doc fees aren’t included at most dealers. Honestly, 8100 otd seems like a decent deal on a 790 duke to me.
A couple of years ago my local dealer was blowing out leftover Grom’s for around $2500. Thought I’d get a brand new Grom for under $3k OTD, hell yeah let’s do the deal. He comes back with an OTD price of almost $5k. WTF?? I obviously didn’t buy it, and I hope the dealer had to choke on those things.
Yeah, there’s acceptable capitalism as consumers……..and then there’s this type of shit. When the out of pocket cost reaches far into double digit percentages, then sum-ting-wong.
My buddy and I recently bought Grom's to ride local cart tracks. They are popular around here and used ones ( even several years old ) sell for the same as new. No dealers were willing to negotiate on pricing and they all wanted extra BS fees. I finally found a small mom & pop Honda dealer and he said no fees, zero, just MSRP and tax/tags. I was skeptical, but went down there and sure enough the deal was exactly as he stated, plus he threw in a free oil filter. The whole experience was actually quite shocking, I was in and out with my new bike in less than 45 minutes. I was so happy with the experience that I went back a few weeks later and bought one for my daughter and my buddy bought one for his son. This dealer got 4 sales in short order because they were good people and honest businessmen.
I don’t blame the dealers for doing what they do to stay open. But sometimes when the product starts bordering double the cost such as that grom mentioned, something’s just off, imo. Even precovid, I had very similar with a new R3 I was considering. Granted I’m a cheap ass mofo, so I might be a worst case example here
