Don't even need to get in to this topic because Darwin addressed this issue a long time ago. In 2021 you have basically every other option in the world to go for a safe fun dive
Dragger is pretty basic unit. Likely wouldn’t be hard to service to good condition. Couterlungs don’t make it easier to breathe at greater depths. Gas density remains the same vs OC. Counter lungs are a necessary part of the closed loop. Fully closed rebreathers don’t completely recycle the o2 consumed. They inject o2 into the loop to replace what is consumed. They also inject your diluent gases based on parameters set by the operator, usually desired partial pressure of O2. As you descend, you can’t just add pure 02 to compensate for lost volume or you’ll tox out around 25 feet. Semi-closed circuit is similar but they bleed gas out of the loop constant and balance with a premixed gas like air or trimix at a fairly fixed rate. “Safer” but less flexible. Sorry for the nerd.
Decades ago is when that equipment is from, Can tell bye the awesome 80/90s bright colored tanks. As a racer I'm sure you live your life on calculated risks. Would you have some one tell you to run a hot lap as fast as you can on a 1980s clap bike you have never been on with any possibility of something to go wrong for fun??
