So long story short, my boss has money, he has done the Porsche and Ferrari driving schools. Now he's thinking/talked into racing. He's 60, glad he got to experience it. Their is high end car company's with racing options. As someone who has actually raced i told him to get a Mazda miata, but seriously if a guy wanted to start racing a car, what makes the most sense. The track car he was riding was over 500k, told him doesn't work in racing. What is a good car race series like wera/ccs for cars

I was just at a car track day at Roebling Road yesterday. I soon hope to do a few car track days.

For this particular org (run by a former car racer), you have to achieve some sort of certification in order to participate. You get this by attending a class hosted by an org like the Porche club. I was going to create a thread on this topic later, so that I can get more feedback from fols here who have gone through the process..

I saw a LOT of $$$ being spent on these things.

I also heard (did not see) a brand new Dark Horse Mustang get totaled by crashing (and tumbling) in turn one. Driver is OK, but car is a total loss. A quick reminder to me that, even with me in a lowly car, this sh1t is dangerous.

Does he want to learn to race, get faster, etc or just be a "racer". If the first Miata or similar lower HP car for a season. If the latter get a Cup car (Ferrari, Porsche, etc) and blow dollars like 20 rappers at the club at events all over the US.

Now if he has done a lot (like dozens and dozens) schools, events, days, then maybe he has passed the Miata stage.

Just because you have cubic dollars, doesnt mean you can instantly be fast in an F-car, porsche, etc.

Radical SR3? I am going to do a trackday soon in one from the Primal School at AMP to see how I like it. I understand they are very capable and not too terrible cost wise to run.

I know a guy that races in Ferrari challenge. If he’s not a good driver and punts someone he will be out of the series quickly. I’d start in a gt4 Porsche class and go up from there once he gets more experience.

and he’s not gonna race in Ferrari challenge for less thag 7 figures a season unless it’s a few races a season.

most guys I know racing GT3 RS cars are in for 7 figures a year if they’re paying a team and just arrive and driving.

Lol, at 60 you can't start a racing career, you can drive fast and have fun. Just need to push him in the right direction so I can stay employed on his yacht!! Racing is a hell of a drug

There are a ton of options these days for folks with money. There are single-make series for open and closed wheel cars, various classes with SCCA, NASA, and SVRA where race shops will transport, and maintain your car or one of theirs, and feed you for the weekend, and for someone willing and able to spend six figures a weekend, there are rides in various "pro" series to be had.

If this dude can employ a staff full time on his yacht, he can spend 7 figures on the Ferrari or Porsche series. Not sure about the Porsches, but the nice thing about the Ferrari series is that the dealer takes care of everything... transporting the car, storage, maintenance, crash damage, etc. These are closed wheel toys for rich dudes, so there WILL be lots of damage to be repaired, which I imagine gets kinda spendy.

I ran my Challenge Stradale at Sears Point during a Ferrari Challenge weekend and I was as fast as the racers at back end of the Challenge pack, with very little track time. You probably get a mix of all speed levels in those races. Just rich guys having fun and living their dreams.

Have him try Karts. They're fun, bang for the buck is through the roof and it's fun.

Buy in is low and it'll teach him enough to be worth it.

Dude, karts are hella hard on your body. I love those things, but not sure i'd want to race them again at my age. Broken ribs don't heal as fast these days.

I understand and trust me as a regular guy, that lives on a yacht for work, it pains me to see how much money gets thrown into the ocean. Now it's more about steering a guy I like in the right direction. He has the money to do the high end race stuff, and is clueless about car racing as me

If I had that kind of money, I'd skip the USA and do a Ferrari series on all the legendary tracks in Europe.

Where is this going to happen? Florida or will he be traveling wherever?

My first instinct is to tell him to get a Porsche GT4 Clubsport and start racing with FARA- they will basically give you a license right away. SCCA in my limited experience will make him jump through more hoops to get a license and the car counts are lower in those classes.

The guy who bought and is running FARA also runs TLM racing which is a high end shop in Miami- they do the race car storage and transport, etc.

One thing that is different from the big series and the club stuff is the paddock vibe- never been to a challenge race, but the SCCA stuff is very old school vibe- like not super exciting with umbrella girls and fans. It's just about the racing. And unless you're at a national, there's only going to be a handful of cars in your class. Unless it's a Miata.

PM Me if interested and I'll give you the FARA guys contact info. He'll make it easy.
