Bombshell - Garrett Gerloff to GRT Yamaha WSBK for 2020!

Speedweek is reporting that Garrett Gerloff in WSBK next year is a done deal.

    Link here.

For those too lazy to use Google Translate, it looks like Gerloff was initially in late stage talks with Ten Kate. Just before his deadline with Yamaha US/Attack, Ten Kate couldn't agree to terms with Gerloff.

Yamaha stepped in and sorted out the details, and now he'll ride with GRT Yamaha alongside Federico Caricasulo!

Garrett Gerloff, third in the US Championship this year, visited the Superbike World Championship in Magny-Cours and looked around for a job. The Texan started an avalanche with it.

24-year-old Garrett Gerloff finished third in the 2019 US Championship behind Yamaha team-mate Cameron Beaubier and Toni Elias (Yoshimura Suzuki). He won four races and was on the podium 15 times in 20 races. He was in Magny-Cours last weekend and spoke to Yamaha about his move to the Superbike World Championship.

By Saturday night, it seemed as if Gerloff would agree with the Yamaha customer team Ten Kate Racing.

Then cabaret scenes took place. Gerloff's new manager told the Dutch team that they would have to make an immediate decision because his protégé had an offer from Attack Estenson Yamaha for the US Championship 2020 and would be deadline on Sunday. Team Principal Ronald ten Kate and Team Manager Kervin Bos thanked for the interview - and ended it.

Then Yamaha intervened because they want to have Gerloff necessarily in the Superbike World Cup. Since the tragic death of Nicky Hayden on May 22, 2017, we saw no American in SBK, the last world title conquered Gerloffs supporter Ben Spies in 2009. The Texan became first and only champion on Yamaha in the near-series championship.

Today leaked from the US that Yamaha and GRT have agreed on Gerloff (24). Teammate is the 23-year-old Federico Caricasulo, currently second in the Supersport World Championship.

There is no room left for Sandro Cortese and team-mate Marco Melandri returns to the end of the season.

Now Yamaha is doing everything possible to transfer Cortese to Ten Kate's customer team. So the Japanese plant could kill two birds with one stone: GRT could fulfill its mission as a talent factory and the Supersport World Champion of 2018 could remain in the Yamaha family.

For Ten Kate, it is also a rewarding situation: If Yamaha places and supports a driver in the team from Nieuwleusen, this is cheaper than having to pay a Xavi Fores or Leon Camier himself.

If surprisingly no agreement is reached between Ten Kate and Cortese, the Swabians still have a chance at Barni Ducati.

The article fails to mention Jake Gagne was the last American in WSBK.

It also seems that if Garrett had an offer from Attack Yamaha in MA, that would indicate that's going to be a 2 bike team and now has an open seat...hello J.D.

Congrats to Garrett and best of luck.

Once it did. I can think of a previous combo that was quite frustrating to watch the pair struggle together.
