i have NO IDEA why ANYONE would be a teacher in florida - the pay is insanely LOW!!! nevermind no union or job protection as well...i thought about moving there 2 years ago and it was crazy how much of a pay cut i would take!!
Absolutely - this place embodies the complete dismissal of the “better to be silent and thought a fool” mantra…
Wha wha what? Dude, I'm poor. If I made 1987 minimum wage per hour the last 10 years of my life I'd be lucky. I'm Broke as fuck, and twice as cheap.
Ken talks about school boards who prevented teachers from getting better at their jobs....perhaps, but that's not my experience. As a school board, at least here in PA, you have no authority. Want to set up a pay for performance situation? NOPE, against state law. Need to discipline a teacher? Just what were you smoking? Want to actually negotiate a contract? Well, the teachers will go on strike, they won't come to meetings and in the end they get back pay. It's really not the individual teachers but the state teachers union who is the overlord. They rule the legislature and they make the laws that bind your hands so no real progress is possible. Real school choice is the only way out of the mess as I see it. As a parent of young kids (I'm not) I would move to an area that has this option if it was in any possible.
That's a good question. Most decisions were really only rubber stamps. The only major thing we could control was building decisions and the taxes that went with them. Here in Benton we would hold meetings and we really didn't need a lawyer. We could have a "No you can't do that, It's against state law" on a 2 minute repeating recording instead. I think the real purpose is to put a pin cushion between the population and the real bastards. Both ends of the spectrum can point to the school board in the middle and pass blame. After I did my 4 years I saw the futility and jumped ship.
yes - but there are places that pay much better as a teacher - to pay those bills....plus just about any job would pay as well as a teacher in florida without the hassle and stress. teachers in miami florida with many years experience, masters etc make in the high 50s - thats it! miami is not a cheap place to live either! especially on 50k
@Yzasserina not sure if it was your intent but your question might be one of the most poetic posts in this thread lol. Despite being unsure if it was rhetorical or not, I was going to respond but sounds like this pretty sums up anything I would have said.
Back in the 80's my cousin Brian, and myself had a coach for gym.Coach Conner, turns out was distant kin folk to my family. We could not have hated this cocksucker more! Any infraction,he put you running this cliff/hill next to the gym until you died,or cried. I don't remember what we did on that one particular day,but Brian, and I were put on that hill for a long time. A dispute with coach and my cousin went bad with some swinging. My cousin didnt back down from no one ever. He called his dad,my uncle Archie a line man,who was small but would whoop that ass too. He showed up at school to get coach Conner, but the cops were there to stop it. These were the some what good ol days where ass whoopins were handed out regularly,we had gun rack in trucks with guns and hunted after school. These kinda thigs now would be all over the news, and jail time. No point, other than like you're job, even if its not high paying,or do something else. I recently graduated my certified dietary mgr university of Fl skooln. and I only do it because I like it! Waay more money as a truck driver, but I have a life now.I enjoy the wacko days of mental fruit cakes
