When I was a kid, I always wanted to have a giant house, with one of those big grand staircases in the middle, that would split at the top, and go to separate wings of the 2nd floor. That picture is as close as I'll get.....

Some amateur architect failed to calculate accurately the space needed for the rise / run. Builder must have not had to worry about a code inspection. Or owner constructed.

 

it could have been done without the ankle breaking mess that that is… I can think of a few different ways just from a few seconds of looking…

I have designed and built some staircases that had to meet certain levels, like on giant unmovable rock, before so maybe it’s a familiar puzzle.
