You're most likely thinking of Hwy 160 that runs East and West from Telluride (on I25) West through Durango towards four corners. Neat road with lots of gorgeous country.
It does when one takes Hwy 12 West out of Telluride and follows it West then North. One of the best bike roads in Colorado.

550 runs south into New Mexico and north up to Silverton , Ouray and close to Telluride. The dual sport riding is awesome in this area.
OK, it seems you have confused Walsenburg with Telluride. I've taken lunch in both towns while in the middle of long rides. They are, to put it mildly, different.

Maybe Colorado makes up for it with reasonable property taxes. Still amazes me, the house I bought in 87 in Texas has taxes almost as high as the much more expensive house I bought in California in 95.
