It all went downhill when they made street bikes the premier class.

Roger started the series toward a slow death and the economy was nearly the last nail in the coffin..

The economy is hurting everyone, but Edmondson's mouth did it's fair share of damage. Many hated the rules package when it came out, in retrospect in was prescient - so the rules weren't the issue in and of themselves. It was Edmondson's mouth and the way the rules, and any discussion thereof, were handled that hurt a lot of the fan base.

The rules haven't changed and I believe the fans are starting to return, if the whole thing had been handled by a fairer spoken person I think some of the damage would never have occurred - but that can't give the sponsors excess money to throw at racing. The economy is hurting EVERYONE.

To get fans to show up, you will also have to have some race teams for the average fan to go check out.

A Honda owner don't care to see a Suzuki race team, they want to see the company race team that they ride.

1986 was the last year of the AMA Formula 1 championship (won by Randy Renfrow).

The handwriting was on the wall in '85.

Wasnt stupidbike already promoted to the premier class in 85 and F1 relegated to secondary status on its way to its eventual demise?

great point....It was one thing if Suzuki was always beating everyone else, but at least with a Honda/Kawi/Yamaha/Ducati there was a chance they could pull the upset. If they are not on the grid to begin with, then what is the point if you just want to see your brand race.
