The SDDS is way cool but I'd feel like a spode wearing it since I've never graduated from a snorkel.

The black/blue GMT has been available for a while. I checked one out this week. It's not in the budget, but it's purdy.

Thanks for all the love about Mom's watch. It makes me even more excited to give it to her.

Funny how the watch thread on a roadracing forum blows up in the off-season. It's almost like we need something to piss away money on besides tires and VP.:D

Saw that. I did the bracelet. Just hate the feel of rubber on my wrist. Either leather or metal for me.

BTDT, the blue with green crystal is awesome, but for some reason I prefer the black with green. It's a beast to wear, but in blue I love Deep Blue DSSD and of course the WG Smurf.

Ok dudes, help me choose my Christmas present! I need to decide on a watch and let my wife know soon so she can get ahold of Santa.

So I haven't ever owned a nice watch, and haven't worn one at all for many years. I want something that looks good but is tough. I am an engineer so I work in an office environment but outside of work I play hard so I need something that can survive the outdoors and I love getting my hands dirty working on various projects. So think, hiking, hunting, climbing, lots of gun range time, working with tools, and still looking cool enough to wear at the office. I think the wife will spend $500 (ish) on this. I'm not sure about features but I like the military style as long as they look cool too. What I like:

This is my top pick but I don't know if I can stomach the spec ops wording on the face (DaveK, you were going to look into these at one point, ever learn anything about them?)

I've been eyeing up these but without seeing it in person I can't decide if it's too busy or not. I like the black metal band better:

Advice? Comments? Suggestions? Other watches this style? How do I get the right band size?

I vote the black patriot--that is one SWEET watch!

As for other brands, check out Lum-Tec. I have one in polished tungsten and carbon fiber and love it. They are an excellent value for the money and a great American watch company. Their hook is a patented day-bright sandwiched lume application.

Thanks, I took a quick look at the Lumtecs and the Chrono looks cool but it's not due out until April. I'll look at them some more.

Do you know about the MTM or is your comment based just on the website? I like that one for sure and they have a sweet black one with orange face but I would like to know more about the brand as a whole.

I don't know much about MTMs outside of seeing them on the website and someone talking about them here.

The citizens are way too busy for me. Too much going on for me to grasp it.

Sorry, I'm not much help and all.

    I'm liking the seiko 007 and 173.

What other watch should I consider before I buy one of these? Haven't owned one in over 10 years so I'm out of the loop on what brands to look at and what to stay away from. I would love to have an omega or rolex gmt but not in the budget right now.

Um none really. The 007 is really a solid classic watch

I'm thinking of ordering up the Wjean Super Oyster II bracelet for the 007. Anyone have any feedback? Online reviews seem very favorable.

You could also go for simple.

I think that the MWC Ltd Edition 100m PVD Pilots Chronograph would suit you. (Lower Left)

I have the MWC basic diver, and it's taken a beating so far.

Ooh, good call I do like that one. At first glance it's a little weird with the overall square look but the more I look at it, it grows on me. Thanks, I'll add it to my list of candidates.

I keep looking at the Citizens, any opinions on them from you guys? Is this ECO drive any good?

    Phl218 .

So, amongst Rolex, omega, breitling and maybe oris, what are the differences in regards of service/maintenance?

I know, it depends but is there a general rule, like b'lings are like 3x more in deed or expensive as omegas for example?

Rolex and Omega are entirely manufacture movements, meaning no parts are sourced from outside suppliers. They are two of the best in the business. Basically you buy the watch, and wear it for 50 years.

I'm no expert on Breitling, but I believe they're using modified ETA movements, as is Oris. I think I heard that Oris began producing an in house movement recently, which would be very cool. Oris is growing on me, they seem to have some really cool stuff that isn't too expensive.

Nothing wrong with ETA, I have five watches with various ETA movements, and when you put them on a timer, they run well, and are close to time. Back to back with a Rolex, however, they look pretty crude.

*Edit - I just realized I vomited a bunch of information that had nothing to do with your question. I would say the difference in cost to service is not much. I'm sure there are differing policies, but my local AD has told me that cleaning and regulating is free forever when you purchase a Rolex from them...

Comment was based on the site, and choosing amongst the three presented. If you like that style, you can also check out the Luminox tactical watches.
