I hear a ton of whining from people that are teachers about pay and how hard their life is. Never anything on this. No sympathy.

You believe people should take a career ending risk by defying orders from legislators and district leaders just to take a stand for somebody else's child? You are WAY more principled than the average bear. I sell a lot of stuff to school districts that they dont need but that is mandated by rules and legislation. I wont be taking a stand on that either. I have a mortgage to pay.
However, ask me to do something that damages a child and its a different story.

As far as teacher whining... I cant think of a single group of people outside of CEO's who dont think their underpaid and overworked. I suspect you have a deeper dislike of teachers than what you cited. I could be wrong though.

Yes, I absolutely think everyone involved at that school should have stepped up and stood up to the administrators and legislators.

Grew up in that school district - nephew and niece are currently in that district. It's in the Main Line of Philadelphia. . .they're smart not to pick that fight - it's not the administrators and legislators they're worried about.

Wouldn’t want to cast any shadows over their precious school utopia they’ve created. Too many arms were broken patting themselves on their own backs. Meanwhile, Qu'ils mangent de la brioche.

And I bet they are paying several specialists to deal with kids with disabilities.
This should have been a big nothing, nevermind calling the cops.

Let me see if I can understand that absurdity that is our educational system. On one hand we have accounts of children getting in trouble for making finger guns and pop tart guns, and a down syndrome child pointing a finger gun that commanded a police response. On the other hand, we have shit stains that have been a drain on the educational system like the Parkland shooter, who should have been charged and put into the criminal justice system but wasn't. That fuckstain wasn't put into the system because it would effect their federal funding.

And people wonder why I have zero faith in the government to control anything.

You DO realize this is a child with trisomy 21- Down's syndrome? And that developmentally, are nearly always way below their age grade peers in maturity, understanding, and IQ?
Virtually not that capable of consciously causing harm t nearly any age.
Having 2 children myself on the Autism Spectrum, etc.
This was way blown out of proportion.
The parents should have this written into the childs IEP- so this does not happen again.

Yes, I realize it. You seem to be conflating my understanding of teacher fear for their careers with some sort of support of this stupid and abusive policy. You are confused. I dont. I work in these classrooms several times a week. I fully understand the challenges of the demographic.

I also understand the fear that the teachers work under as the Sword of Damocles dangles above their head in the form of administrators, parents, advocates and legislators, very few of which actually understand the target population (excluding some parents who are educated on the subject).

Self protection is human nature and teachers are human, that is all.

On another note, I have read hundreds of IEP's and noting this kind of stuff is commonplace. Not sure why that didn't happen here. I would like to know more.

I see. I too was a school teacher, coach, with teaching degrees for years. Went back to get my PA degree- in healthcare now.
I probably did miss the point you were making. No beef with you.

If you missed my point its my fault for poor communication.

Its important to note that I am NO EXPERT. You actually live the life, all day, every day. I just make a living off of it by preying off the weaknesses school districts have when it comes to these students. Sensory rooms, IEP's, ABA Therapy, etc are my area of expertise but in the end, I am just a visitor to the space. Damn lucky to be one too. Amazing students stun me every day.

So you are in a classroom with a mentally challenged 6 year old who does a gun pointing action at you. What do you do? Personally I find this easy, you try to explain how someone might misunderstand and be all butt hurt as most people are pansies looking to be offended (not in those true words). Then you laugh with kid and maybe suggest some alternate behaviors that are fun/less offending to pansies. No administrator, no record of the event and no harm to a little kid that will have plenty of challenges in life without you adding to them.

If nobody else sees it? It never happened. I wouldn’t even go to the trouble you outlined. That child is severe and is zero threat.

However, if a TA or therapist or some other potential rat sees it I would then follow protocol so I keep my job. YMMV.
