I just ordered a zeeltronic PCDI-11 for the cr125 powered RS50 Aprilia. I ordered it from Jim at Fast from the Past. We will see how it ends up doing.

I've been fighting getting a clean RPM signal out of this bike for the past year almost. The zeeltronic has a dedicated tach output which will solve this problem.

Being able to adjust and set the ignition curve to whatever I want will be great as well. I am still running a dirt bike ignition curve from 1991; who knows how ideal that is for a road bike with an RS125 pipe. haha.

got it installed, got it fired up! I left the static angle normal in the settings, and set the base timing to 16 degrees. I marked the stator cover plate at TDC and ~1.32mm btdc which is 16 degrees.

I fired it up and it ran! I hooked up the timing light and it was all sorts of off. like, full advance was 0 degrees timing. I re checked my timing, and made a ton of changes in the settings, and no matter what i did, about the most advance I could get was 5 degrees.

I did a bunch of internet searching and didn't really find anything, and the system is very simple, so I thought of changing really the only thing I could change... switch the polarity of the two wires on the trigger/pickup on the stator.

I switched the two wires, and set everything back to what my initial test was. 35 degrees of static angle, 16 degrees of timing across the board. I give it a bump and.. bam! Now we've got throttle response!!

hooked the timing light up to it and it works perfectly. dead on 16 degrees.

i put a quick little timing curve in and it had a flat spot that needs to be worked out but damn the thing runs SO much better now! It's not cutting out at 10500 anymore either, revs clear to the limiter at 12k.

Glad it worked out for you. What kind of speeds will that CR125 engine pull an RS50 chassis to?

I've casually considered making a CR125 street bike. Trying to trade my GSX-F 750 for something under 250 lbs.

its pretty sketchy/crazy fun at 118. i haven't gone faster than that yet

So I made some adjustments to the timing and made it much smoother and holy cow this thing has some great midrange and top end now. It seems like it picked up power everywhere, adding more timing advance down low and backing it off up top.

How do you know when you have too much timing, other than a detonation counter and/or a good old hole through a piston? Haha.

I've been told that in the top gears if EGT slows it's rate of increase or even stops or drops while the cylinder head temp / spark plug thermocouple continues to increase, that is a sure sign of too much timing advance. Anybody played with this?

Glad it's running good for you. You should've given me a call when you were setting up and we would have been glad to help.

Reluctor pickups do have polarity as you found but none of the OEMs mark the polarity so basically you have to try it both ways to see which is correct.

Haha Jim I wasn't gonna bother you unless I failed after a whole day of messing with it. It works awesome! I want these for my 250's now.

I just need to figure out how much timing this 54x54 motor wants

having configured a similar rig (ignitech) for my 250, i strongly suggest finding someone w/ a good load control dyno that has a exh gas analyzer (5-way). an operator familiar with its use on 2T's ia a huge plus. that will get you to an optimized curve fastest. w/ a good load control dyno, you can see in real time if the output is rising (too rich / retarded) or falling (too lean/advanced) at any given rpm as the engine heat builds and reaches quiescence. gas indicators provide insight on the timing/jetting balance.

i'm not a huge fan of EGT due to the large time constant of the sensor.

heard lots of good things about the zeel and have thought about trying one sometime. the adj spark strength and pwm controlled powerjet outputs are trick.

Around here I have not found much in the way of that. Most everybody just has a wideband o2 and dynojet style intertial dynos. Load control with step function is the way to go. run to full throttle, full load, play with the timing and see what makes the most power.

My bikes and myself are located in Saint Pete for now. I have given it so much thought to moving out west, though. If I don't end up in charlotte or pittsburgh, i might just move out to modesto area, where the rest of my family is.
