When you read this... "The WSIS, sponsored by the International Telecommunications Union (search), the United Nations' key agency on telecommunications, will bring together more than 50 heads of state, along with an expected 5,000 to 6,000 government, business and non-profit representatives from across the globe to discuss in part “the yawning telecommunications gap between emerging economies and the developed world.”" ...did the thoughts "massive waste of money sending government workers off on a 3 day jolly (hotel, drinks, food etc) on the tax-payers ticket"??? I did.
How in the hell do you control the internet? What a total waste of US tax payers money (since the US in the largest source of captial to the UN... when we feel like paying). We're going to wire your village for the interent, but we don't care if you F@cking have electricity. Get the US out of the UN. We don't need them, but they need us.
The Internet got to where it is today because of a handful of very influential key people who did what they damned well pleased. Guys like Ray Tomlinson, Tim Berners-Lee, Vint Cerf, Paul Mockapetris, Chuck Herzfeld and Jon Postel didn't sit around in committees and get bogged down in red tape - they rolled up their sleeves and got it done, solving what they saw as problems in computer networking. They put their ideas into code and made it work. In the Information Age, you have to pay your dues, not buy in with layer upon layer of bureaucracy. This simply will never happen. Besides, Al Gore said forget about it.
Global Socialism at it's first step of being forced on to you. "...but remain undecided on whether rich nations should help their poor counterparts pay for the increase." http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031207/ap_on_hi_te/un_tech_summit_2 What a bunch of unhappy horsesh@t.
