im starting to wonder how many of the "no"s are missreading the question to think the conveyor is meant to try to launch the plane........ as in the engines on the plane are off. I have noticed at least a couple arguments that seem to think that. Oh yeah, YES!!!!!!!!!
First 3 results from Google say yes and so do I: http://txfx.net/2005/12/08/airplane-on-a-conveyor-belt/ http://www.straightdope.com/columns/060203.html http://biocurious.com/the-case-of-the-plane-and-the-conveyor-belt But is this an African laden plane or the European laden plane and is it filled with swallows. Also, if I'm riding in a train at 50 mph and I throw a baseball at 50mph did I just throw a 100mph fast ball?
Wait, wait, wait. Is the train going up hill or down? Is said baseball of the official size and weight?
Ok, let's just say the plane does fly, what if.......... in mid-flight it lost all power and plummeted to the ground, BUT, the milisecond before it hit the ground, I JUMPED!!!!
Mythbusters on the Discover Channel went over this last Wednesday night (12.12.07). I forgot to tape it, so I don't know what they came up with... But in my personal opinion, I believe the plane will CRASH AND BURN!
So let's say the plane was in Kracow and everytime it looked like it was going to take flight from the conveyor it became extremely unstable. So I get on the plane and ask all the local guys who are seated on the right side to get up and transfer to the left side of the plane. Any foreigner can hang out on right side or transfer to the right side if they want. The plane and the conveyor start up again and this time the plane takes off with perfect stability. (man I'm a jackass)
In any possible real world situation, yes. Remove friction, inertia, speed of light and allow the treadmill to INSTANTAINOUSLY match the speed of the wheels and reach infinitely high speeds, then no. Well maybe.
I suggest the WERA moderators place a permanent ban on any further Aircraft /conveyor belt discussions ...I really do not want to know just how many stupid people there are around me when I'm out on the track
