It was the first all vintage event I've been to but taking into account what most veterans have said, the turn-out was fair. Most of the guys I usually hang with either couldn't make the event or went to race the CCS event before doing Daytona.

I was one of three to grid for the classic lightweight race (after finally getting my motor sorted out well enough to race) but after turn two it was only Gary Smith and I left on the track.

He was running very strong and just left me behind. Not only did he have a stronger motor but all hopes of me even keeping him in sight were dashed when my rear left chain adjuster stripped and began pulling the rear wheel out of alignment. I felt the bike behaving really weird in turn 4 on the first lap and by the 5th lap I could hear the chain slapping the swingarm.

My big challenge was just trying to finish the "race" without getting spit off.

My favorite part of the day was watching the classic middleweight and Formula RD session. Seeing Dick Miles on his 1938 Velocette KTT (rigid frame and girder forks) leading a pack of RD's and CB350's was testament to this mans riding ability. For me, it was the most memorable image of the day.

There was also a picture session commemorating Ted Hubbard's 50 year racing career. Although Ted is a racing celebrity, you would never know it from his kind, very soft-spoken demeanor. He truly is one of the greats in motorcycling and WERA Vintage is very lucky to have him as a member.
