I'm selling my racebike to a guy from Canada. I live in California and bought it from a local in 2007, with a clear title. At the time it had already been converted to a racebike, but it still had a valid street registration. The guy signed and dated the title (2007), but I never countersigned and submitted it. Never heard anything from anyone about it - technically you're supposed to file a PNO for it, but I don't think he did, and I didn't, so who knows where it is in the DMV system today. Question is: what's going to happen if I try to PNO it now using my name? Or maybe even a cleaner way of doing it would be to ask the guy I bought it from to apply for a duplicate/lost title, and then get him to sign it again with the current date on it. Not sure what that would trigger for him, though, in terms of the DMV wondering why the VIN has been dormant for so long. Anyone know how the Cal DMV works and what the best option would be on this? My buyer is going to need the title to get the bike into Canada. Thanks for any info.
