Having never been to a WERA race before, I'm planning on going to the Summit Point event over the Easter weekend (as a spectator). Can anybody who has been there before answer a few questions for me......

Lodging: Is it a case of limited, already booked motels ? If not can you recommend a place. Worse case; is camping available ?

Schedule: Posted anywhere ? Only in very general terms on the SP website.

Things to do: to wit; keeping the wife entertained. Anything ?

Thanks for reading this thread and helping me out.

Lodging: Is it a case of limited, already booked motels ?The closest motels are in Charles Town, about 15 minutes from the track. There is a bed and Breakfast on the main drag in Charles Town. Aside from the 2 older motels, there is one of the major chain-types there (dont recall which one) built within the past 5 years. Martinsburg WV and Winchester both are about 30 minutes away, and have the major motel chains there. Martinsburg has the more recently built ones (within the past 10 years)

Worse case; is camping available ? Yes, lots of camping space available, some with electric hookups. There is a fee for using electricity - $10 for the weekend. A lot of people stay at the track. facilities are MUCH better than at the Sledges!

Schedule: Posted anywhere ? An event schedule should be up in a few days. In general, Saturday, morning practice, afternoon Soles and Vintage races, Sunday, Morning Practice, afternoon, modern sprints and 2 Vintage races.

Things to do: to wit; keeping the wife entertained. Anything
    Watch the races! :D

Harpers Ferry is about 30 minutes east of the track on Rte 340. Besides the historical stuff, there are a few crafts/curios type shops up the hill. Additionally, there is the Charles Town race track in Charles Town. Lay a $2 bet on the trotters if they are running. If not, there is a casino of sorts on the horse track property.

Take a canoe or raft trip on the river near Harpers Ferry if you are brave and can handle a high water table. Wet Suits recommened for rafting. Winchester and Martinsburg have the usual mall-type stuff on a smaller scale. Take a short ride down I-81, better yet, down the US route (6 or 11, I forget which it is) and get a feel for rural life (chicken-fried steak and vinegar for your fries).

About 30 minutes away is Front Royal, VA, the northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Drive. It has about a 35 mile segement until the first place you can get off the drive and take I81 back towards the track, or simply make a u-turn and go back and look again. Modest park entrance fee is good for the day. Make sure you have gas in the car, I can not recall if the first segment has a fuel stop/restaurant on the top of the mountain. Beware of deer and stopped cars, and DO NOT GET CAUGHT SPEEDING!

The Shenadoah Valley is rich in history. Stonewall Jackson slept here. About an hour north of Summit Point is Antietem Battlefield. South off I81 is New Market. Civil War buffs can tell you more.

Gee, I think I am gonna bag the races and go for the ride myself! :D

    CORRECTION!

My bad. The Skyline Drive starts in Front Royal, not the Blue Ridge Parkway!
