I finally learned my lesson a few years ago to not give my opinion unless asked, especially on here. :)
I'm more than happy to share my experience, as the whole reason for me doing the treatment is an experiment for other patients of my wife's medical practice. They call me the canary :). If I don't die, it's safe for other patients.

My observations from the first treatment:

My wife intentionally hid the specifics from me before sending me to the other doctor who specializes in it. She says if anyone saw the process they wouldn't do it. The theory is to reintroduce injury to the area so the body will undergo a healing process (in my case) 5 years after torn meniscus and strained MCL.
My assumption was that it would hurt for a few days, but 3 weeks after treatment I'm still sore.
Everything you think you know will be backwards. We want inflammation, not relief from it. No ice, asperine, etc. inflammation is a sign that the body is healing. Interesting concept.

Price: Even with a professional discount it is steep, $850 a pop for an estimated 4-6 treatments once per month, but it's about 1/10 the cost of surgery for me. Not that I would do the surgery, I was content having a significantly weaker right leg and just sucked up the slight pain and swelling that comes with lifting or Jiu-Jitsu a few times per week. Again, it was more of, "OK, I'll be the guine pig and relay the info to other patients."

Process: don't ask :). The needles are big, but it's over in about 2 minutes. Close your eyes :)

It seems each experience will be anecdotal. It's not the magic bullet, and multiple pieces will solve the puzzle. Even at 170lbs, he suggest I drop 10 lbs to ease stress on the knee. Bicycling will be the new exercise. The pipe dream of returning to bodybuilding and making a run at Mr Olympia are likely over :). An attempt to return to heavy lifting should not be the intent for me.
I'm already into healthy eating, etc but it is a combination of multiple things that will increase the chance of success.

  6. I've had it in my hip after a replacement/ secondary injury. It sucked and not sure if it helped or strict rehab regiment or both. Hips damn good now though. No running or any impact stuff so it's cycling and eliptacle for me only.

I have an appointment on June 6th. I'm looking for another Dr though after learning this particular Dr doesn't use a fluoroscope or ultrasound to inject into the hip capsule..

Also, haven't heard from anyone who had success with PRP and hip osteoarthritis...

Dr Hauser here in SW Florida walked me through his practice and he has a lot of cool toys. The dynamic X-ray video machine is pretty awesome.
He didn't use any of them on my knee. I assume there is much less risk than an area like the spine, etc. he's been at it for 25+ years, just grabbed his tray of syringes and went to town on my knee :). The presentation was something to behold. Not for the squeamish. I return on the 12th (I think that's correct) and will ask his opinion on hip. We had other patients write down questions for my first visit.

The way it has been explained to me by several hip specialists is that cartilage cannot be regenerated. Period. Once you're bone on bone you're on borrowed time until a replacement, simple as that. I never had PRP but had a couple cortisone injections before my replacements. The first helped A LOT, the second not at all. The hip replacement surgeon I went to sprays the surgery site with PRP because he believes it aids in the healing process following surgery.

I don't want to sound like a downer but I'm of the opinion that many of the options meant to delay and possibly prevent hip replacement are simply experimental treatments that are equal parts science and economics. Seems like they all play on our HOPES to delay/prevent the inevitable while enticing us to making substantial financial contributions to the medical community. /rant

Good luck with whatever path you choose. Osteoarthritis of the hip(s) is noooooooo fun. Just don't panic about replacement. It's no walk in the park but there is plenty of life following the installation of metal hips. Hell, I did a 32 mile mountain bike ride yesterday with over 5000' of elevation gain. Having two metal hips was never even the slightest hint of an issue.

Thanks Quig. Glad the resurfacing is going good.
I like the idea of resurfacing and keeping the femoral head… Doesn't seem to be anyone in the Nashville area doing it. One Dr I spoke to
who used to do that said he wasn't happy with the recidivism.
He is the surgeon I used last year to repair my elbow after my crash at Mid-Ohio...seemed really sincere about it and only does the mini posterior hip replacement now.
The Dr I am considering to do the replacement on both hips does direct anterior only. He is trained has done many super path but doesn't do those anymore..

3rd session just finished up on my knee. Holy hell the pain and optics of this is insane.
I will say the crackling in my meniscus is less to the touch and audibly. You can still hear it on a calm sunny morning

Next test is weight lifting and I may try to head back to Jiu Jitsu to see how lateral movements do this week.

Hip Pain sucks. Dealing with it for the last 4-5 years. Had FAI surgery on one side a couple years ago. It's better, but still not 75%. The other side needs surgery and was hoping something else would come through that could help, non-surgical. Really don't want to go through surgery again that will only hold off the inevitable hip replacement. Must say hip pain is down right depressing. But as Quig said, a lot of people after replacement says it was worth it.
