I have never trusted those riveted on end caps, now I'm glad I didn't. I always measure from a mark further down the tape.

 

Yeah, learned that a long time ago in the welding /fab business.

The riveted tab was usually good for rough framing. When it came to trim, I used your method.

 

The tab is for inside/outside measuring. If moves (the thickness of the tab) for a reason. I always cringe when I see people let a tape slam back into itself when winding it up.

 

And, then there’s people who just don’t understand measurements at all. Ahh, no you can’t Dawg...

Werd. I always let my finger take the impact.

 

I do the thumb brake, and sometimes let my finger take the hit lol.

Like tire pressure gauges.

 

I do it all the time on my way home from work. No big deal.

 

You have to trust your tire guy's gauge. Consistency is more important to me in this instance. As long as I like the tire feel and wear I can create a repeatable condition with that one gauge.
