I'm always on the search for obscure bands that don't suck. Looking for some recommendations! First one I'll throw out there is Throttlerod. Their first album "Hell and High Water" is the one to check out.
How obscure? Drag the River - Alt country Scorpios - Rock? Alt Country? Who cares, it's good. Lydia Loveless - Alt country. oh, and a BBSer is the bassist. She kills!
The Monomen (The lords of falling ceiling plaster) Gaza Strippers (Ex-Didjits) Gunship 666 (Japan's best export)
Mostly Funk/Jazz: The New Mastersounds Calibro 35 The Budos Band Galactic The Meters The Bamboos Poets of Rhythm
Probably not obscure but I saw The Record Company and Jamestown Revival Wednesday. Record Company blues/rock and kicks ass live. Jamestown is country and some blues type stuff. Enjoyed them both.
Oh, and check out the Rita Mae Young video on youtube, someone told me there was a hula hoop in it, dam if I can spot it.
No idea what genre you're wanting but I just found this Ukrainian metal band with a chick vocalist that's awsome. They're called Jinjer.
Kix - House band at Hammerjacks in Baltimore for a while. Released a few albums. Hybrid Ice - Pretty good stuff.
Why obscure? I laughed my ass off when fountains of Wayne won "best new artist" a decade after "radiation vibe" was near the top of the charts. My point is there are probably many established bands you would enjoy if you were aware they existed. Popular doesn't necessarily mean bad.
Some GREAT recommendations, fellas. Thank you. Not looking for any genre in particular. Whatever's clever. @rk97 I say obscure because it's far less likely that I'll have heard it before. But if that limits you too much, feel free to post some lessor obscure songs. @casjoker - Blues/rock (emphasis on rock) is one of my favorite genres. Since you like the Record Comany, I highly recommend the following: The Glorious Sons - The Union Kill it Kid - You Owe Nothing ("I'll be the First" is a bad ass song, and the acoustic version on youtube is also phenom.) Dirty Sweet - Of Monarchs and Beggars Broken Witt Rebels - All three EP's have some good stuff. The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely (Album titled song is great.) The Parlor Mob - And You Were a Crow (Album titled song is great.) Rival Sons (definitely not obscure) My Goodness The Muggs Left Lane Cruiser Kaleo (not even close to being obscure)
Instrumental progressive metal djent : Unbeing The Last Colour In the category of "Not obscure and doesn't not suck" : Metallica
