I don't think it's a good sign when you have to put cardboard underneath your plane for an oil leak.

Without a lot of head work, a type 1 VW falls flat on it's face around 4k rpm. Dual carbs help by shortening the intake tract but it looks like you have a single carb setup. Valve cover sealing can be a bitch, had some luck with rubber gaskets but cork worked fine if fresh. They don't seal worth a damn if they start drying out.

The cranks in the type 1 were pretty stout, would take a lot of abuse. Main bearings weren't too bad but the cases can get pounded out pretty badly. We always started out with a case that had been align-bored.

Well...I finally got my tailwheel check out done and took my little Vee Dub up today... What a blast. Its like the EX250 of planes....Slow-ish but very responsive.

Did a bunch of landings and didnt turn it into a pile of scrap wood... so thats nice.

Awesome. The pic makes it look like it's parked in your garage, are you on a runway? Single seater?

That was previous owners. He had a grass strip in his yard.

It’s like building a race bike vs buying one already built.
Kits for these models (TEAM Minimax) are about 5-7k. Engine will cost 5-10k. So total cost 10-20k.
You can by them used from 5-10k

Very similar, you even get to fix every thing the previous owner screwed up when they built it, just like a bike. I've been looking at the Soneri 2l for a while, which are in the same price range.
