"Iraqi official says limited German, French help won't be forgotten" despite pleas from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for aid "in the hour of need." http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/10/23/sprj.irq.main/index.html France's refusal render meaningful humanitarian assistance seems to completely fly in the face of their supposed care for the ordinary Iraqis, putting into question once again whether France's opposition to the war was actually on humanitarian grounds; or was it simply to keep Saddam's regime in power, thereby protecting France's oil & commercial interest in Iraq. maybe you should put some emphasis on these two paragraphs. no other explanation needed. "Some countries have balked at funding programs in post-war Iraq, citing the go-it-alone approach taken by the United States and Britain ahead of the conflict. Germany, France and Russia -- the chief opponents of war before the U.S. invasion -- sent lower level officials to the conference. Those countries have been opposed to what they see as too much U.S. control of the reconstruction process".
The story behind the story today is that France wants to obstruct the donor's conference in fear that Iraqi debts to France will be investigated, exposing French military business with Saddam at a time when Iraqi people were strapped from food, medicines, etc. From Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=reutersEdge&storyID=3677849 Quote: "The best way for donors to help the Iraqi people rebuild their country... is to investigate those debts and write them off if they were used for weapons, instruments of repression, or for corrupt purposes. [...] Investigating those debts would entail countries like France being held accountable for selling warplanes and missiles and Russia for selling tanks, aircraft and helicopters [in violation of UN sanctions.]" -peekay
I can't believe I agree with this tool. But in my case, it's based on experience. Girls are prettier, though. Must be the food.
