So, these two guys at work are arguing. One owns a 1984-ish Honda V65 that he bought new back then and says it was the fastest production bike at the time. He still rides it to work in the summers. The other dude, same story with a 1984-ish GS1100E (I think it is).
They come to ask me since I'm the resident "motorcycle guy".
I said that my 1984 RZ350 was the fastest thing in on the road. They said, no, we mean in a straight line. Oh, that's easy, my old 1984 VF1000F interceptor. :)

Clearly we're all delusional and pick our own bikes.

I tried for a while to google it but can't find a definitive list. Anyone know where a guy could find an unbiased list of say the 1/4 mile times of the fastest bike through each production year of the 1980s? Not exotics, just regular showroom production bikes from the big Jap 4 companies?

    '84 Kawasaki Turbo 750 or Ninja 900.

I think the Turbo 750 held the record for fastest production bike with Pee Wee Gleason at the controls. Dude could not be beat at the drag strip.

Quarter mile? GS1150E or ES until the Vmax came along.

Everything else? Who cared, they were slower.

The GS block is still run in drag racing even if the bodywork looks like something else.

The large displacement 1,099 cc (67.1 cu in) V65 Magna created buzz as Honda's entry in the 1/4 mile wars between manufacturers at the time, causing Suzuki to respond with the 1200 Madura (1/4 mile time 11.66 s at 115.7 mph), and going up against such competition as the Suzuki GS1150E (10.47s at 128 mph).[8] The V65 landed somewhere between these two, posting a quarter mile time of 11.29 s @ 119.2 mph (191.8 km/h).[3]

    Year for year in Guinness Book listed as the fasted production motorcycle.[citation needed] 1980=Dunstall Suzuki GS1100CS 1981=Dunstall Suzuki GS1100CS 1982=Dunstall Suzuki GS1100CS 1983=Dunstall Suzuki GS1100CS 1984=Dunstall Suzuki GS1100CS 1985=Honda V65 Magna 1986=Honda V65 Magna 1987=Honda V65 Magna 1988=Honda V65 Magna 1989=Honda V65 Magna 1990=Kawasaki ZX10

116 BHP Japanese Honda V-65 Magna with a liquid cooled V-4, 4 cylinder 16 valve DOHC 1098cc (67.1 cubic inches) engine with a top design speed of 173 MPH. Standing quarter mile time of 11.07& seconds @ 123.62 mph and 0-60 in 4.3 seconds according to Cycle World magazine

I had a Vmax. I don't think it made anywhere near the advertised horsepower. It sure was fun at the drag strip, though.

This could be a never ending debate. at around 11.2 seconds at 125 mph (201 km/h) for the quarter mile and 148 mph (238 km/h) flat out. One magazine even branded it the fastest bike they had ever tested, and Kawasaki ran some ads claiming it to be "The Fastest Production Motorcycle in the World". Jay "PeeWee" Gleason also recorded a 10.71 second quarter mile for Kawasaki

I used to give some guy fits who rode a V65. On my GS850L he would beat me in the quarter by a wheel at most, and he couldn't stand it. I could launch so much better than he it took everything that bike had to run me down. Good times.

To answer the question it was the GS1150 and the V-Max. I'm going to buy a GS1150ES one of these days.

The V65 was the most overrated POS around back then.

The GS1100/1150 were consistently the quickest and fastest until Yamaha came out with the FJ1100/1200, it was the fastest until Suzuki came out with the GSXR1100/ Katana 1100 at the end of the 80's.

Whats your cut off date? I just pulled out a 1987 motorcyclist with a comparison of the 1000 hurricane, 1000 ninja, gsxr1000, fj1200 and fzr1000. and the winner in that group in the 1/4 was the gsxr with a 10.59 at 128mph. The hurricane ran an impresive 161 mph top speed. I will have to seen if i can find a earler mag with the v65 and gs1150.

The gs1150 and v65 may have been able to run close in the 1/4 but i dont remeber them running any where near 161mph.

fastest in a straight line. isn't that generally top speed?

from my extensive and irreputable memory of all things trivial and inconsequential...:D

    '83, magna, *138 mph.
    '84, ninja?
    '85, don't know.
    '86, ninja10, *160mph.

    *according to the mags.

My '84 Ninja topped out at just under 150 indicated (and it took a long stretch of asphalt to get there). Indicated is always optimistic.

I guess I'm not sure between 1/4 mile and top speed. Depends on who owns what and who's betting donuts. Looks like most guys got a little more out of the Suzuk than the Honda.

I believe in 1984/85, the fastest (top end) production bike was the Yamaha RZ500, at 151 MPH out of the crate. The 1986 Suzuki RG500 was a 'quicker' bike, but slower at top end, unless you modded it, in which case it was no longer strictly production/OEM, but faster than anything I can remember.

In the real world most guy's got a LOT more out of the Suzuki's.:D

Back when the V65 first came out one of the local drag race guys went out and bought a new one thinking he would rule the world. He was badly disapointed when it wouldn't run but 8.00 in the eighth mile and 12.00's in the quarter mile. The stock GS's would run 7.00'sin the eighth and 11.00's in the quarter with a decent rider.

About once a year I meet someone who had an H-2 that swears it was and still is the fastest thing on two wheels ever made.

Are the '87, '88' and '89 Magnas overseas versions? My Honda fiches show the 1100 Magna running from '83 to '86.
