I'm having a fasciotomy on my right forearm for arm pump on the 17th. I've been searching and reading up and I haven't seen a single negative comment about it. For anyone that's had it done, any negative affects?

I've seen a specialist and orthopedic surgeon, tried all the common remedies, done the pressure test, etc. I definitely have compartment syndrome and it's made riding at a high level for more than a couple laps near impossible. Doctors say it's a simple procedure and I can go back to doing normal things the next day with no ill affects. Just interested in some first person feedback before I go under the knife.

    Broome??

How much does this cost if you don't mind me asking. I know it is an elective surgery so I know it won't be covered.

Plenty can go wrong. If scar tissue develops, it can make the problem worse.

I've was diagnosed CECSF four years ago. My resting pressure was 22mm/hg. I don't remember what it was after the grip test, but it was much higher than it's supposed to be.

My first doctor recommended surgery and said it was a simple procedure and would solve the problem. I got a second opinion from a guy who had worked on me before, and he seemed to think it was a bad idea.

I decided not to do it. I think if you're a pro rider and you're pounding out laps every single day, it might make sense. I'm told that the benefits will disappear quickly if you're not riding constantly, which isn't possible for most of us.

This is what I was thinking. I mean unless you are like Broome who lives breathes and eats racing, or a professional, I just can't see the advantages for us regular club racer types.

I mean MAYBE if you are like a wank a holic and can't get your spank on lol

Cost is in the 2-3k range. The fasciotomy is a permanent thing, so I don't see why the benefits would disappear. The fascia will never grow back around the muscle. Don't know what my resting pressure was, but after gripping some, the pressure was at 36. They said anything over 30 they would definitely recommend the surgery.

Also, I do about 8 race weekends a year, wakeboard, and do enduros in the off-season. So I'm riding or using my forearm muscles a decent amount.

Never heard of it in any other sport, not that I've looked.
Do weight lifters do it? Seems if anyone is gonna get pumped it would be that crowd.
Or, is the name of the symptom not accurate?

It has its associated risks and complications....can leave a pretty large and noticeable looking scar depending on the size of the incision that the doctor does. Honestly unless my livelihood was being affected by my performance here I'd leave it alone. I see no point in going under the knife for a little greater comfort doing extra curricular activities so to speak.... but that's just me.

There are some theories that the fascia is one of the main things that limits muscle SIZE growth. Like a rubber band holding a bunch of twigs together (twigs being he fibers running along the length of the muscle), and some people's fascia is more pliable and able to stretch than others.

However in the BB'ing world they use fascial stretching techniques moreso than going in and simply slicing the facia open. You also have to remember that its not an exact science in the sense that it may result in the muscle looking slightly deformed depending on how the fascia is cut and the muscle released which can be counterproductive in bodybuilding where they are being judging on the physical appearance not just outright size of the muscle.

This was what I was always wondering, it's not like the fascia is removed. It's just sliced. Like will it then bulge through where the cuts are. I learned about the fascia when I was big into bodybuilding and heard the Arnold was one of the first people to attempt to stretch the fascia.

Dig into it man. It's not all sunshine and roses. See if you can find info on Brock Sellards. He had serious complications.

Fasciotomy is necessary for acute compartment syndrome, where the blood cannot leave the extremity. In those cases, it's an emergency surgery to save the limb. The surgery as an elective procedure is still completely experimental for our purposes, and less than half of people who do it see results.

Keep in mind that surgeons are not monks. We put physicians on a pedestal, but they like to make money just like the rest of us, and they make money when people buy surgery. Go ask a car salesman if he thinks you need a new car. Of course you do.

Ever wonder why they still use the phrase "practicing medicine".

I had it done after I shattered my left forearm, actually they just left it in place after surgery due to compartment syndrome, belly of the muscle pops out on the outside of my forearm, inside has a graft since they couldn't close it completely, you can see the muscle move when I move my thumb. :)
