Target are paying for hiring an idiot for an attorney. $12,000 and a nondisclosure agreement would have been a small price to pay to make a nuisance suit go away. Hell, maybe they would have gotten away with $6000. A $750 counter-offer is just an insult, whether they deserve that amount or not. This is what happens when people feel insulted. Someone let his ego get in the way of his client's best interest.
