What happened to all the XB Buell racebikes?

    RRP Kinda Superbikey

I remember when I started racing back in 2004, seemed like there were a ton of XB9/12 racebikes competing.

Sitting here sick as a dog last couple days got me reminiscent.

There are very few still in race mode that I've been able to find. I suspect there are more on display as history/art pieces than actual, raced XBs at the moment. I tried HARD to find one for Super Hooligans as it would have saved me tons starting with an already setup bike than building from scratch but I just couldn't lay hands on one.

I saw two out at HPT for the AHRMA round back in May.

Always thought they were so cool. Especially the Hal’s HD super built ones we’d see at Road America - ram air, etc. sounded like SBC Chevy V8s at idle.

    Super trick.

The thought of those does bring back some memories. Shawn Higbee used to rail around big Willow on a Buell.

Loved watching Paul James chase Ed Key at Blackhawk on his Buell(s).

2004 was 20 years ago. I know, doesn’t feel like it to me either. Buell was always boutique, but compared to now it was practically a mainstream brand circa 2004.

Can’t logistically maintain a class of racebikes based on an extinct manufacturer. Unless they’re MZs and essentially lawnmowers.

Correction: MZ still exists. Though I don’t know what they make anymore, I’m sure it’s not related to the 2 stroke race bikes they cobble together in the UK. I’ve always wanted one of those.

And here I thought you were asking about the XBRR
    Which was the race bike
I was at Daytona 2006, watched them all blow up

That is what I was thinking, the XBRR's are in a pile of broken rods, dropped valves and blown gear boxes :)

Edit: I am only kidding, kind of.

I raced one in 08-09 as a novice. Sold it and upgraded to an 1125 in 2010 that I'm still racing. Keep the engine stock and they last forever. I blew up the transmission in the race motor that came with the bike so I pulled the engine out of my Ulysses and raced that for a year before swapping to another stock motor before I sold it. The Ulysses is still running strong with the only effect from racing being that it quit using oil.

Sold my race Buell in 2020. Only Buell I have left is my '98 S1W in street trim. Still have the Ural and been riding the heck out of a Royal Enfield Himalayan for the past 2 years...
