What kind of bike did you race and when?

I was at work one day, saw a magazine with a guy racing, and was like “I’m gonna do that”. I had never sat on a motorcycle of any kind, dirt nor street.

Called my buddy who had been riding bikes forever and told him what I wanted to do. He was like “Get a gixxer” I said “Ok, what’s a gixxer?”. He was like “Suzuki, GSXR”. I was like “Ok, I don’t know what that is. You’ll have to show me”.

We went to the dealership and he pointed one out. It was black and looked cool, so I said I’d take it.

I didn’t want to tell the dealership guys that I don’t know how to start it. So I was like “My friend will help get it on the trailer while I pick out a helmet”.

Then we went to my friends house, unloaded the bike and I was like “How do I make it go, I don’t see the thumb thing for the gas”. He was like “No, you twist this”. I was like “Well that’s kinda fucked up, why didn’t you tell me to get one with a regular throttle”. He was like “They are all like this”.

3 months later my buddy couldnt keep up with me in the mountains. 6 months later, I gridded up for my first race.

I can’t draw, sing, play any instruments or any of that shit, but motorcycles came easy to me. It felt natural.

So yeah, I had no motorcycle experience. I bought my first bike with a sole intention of going racing.

I had to lie/cheat/steal! I told my elderly grandparents,that my mom said it was ok for them to loan me the money for my first street bike at age 16.
Paid the guy $1500 bucks for an 1983 suzuki gs550 es. He gave me a St.Paulie girl beer,helmet,and keys to the bike.I had never ridden a street bike before.I rode off into Friday traffic,with zero idea wtf I was doing.Made it home,and mom was pissed,but I really didnt care at that point.This was life changing,and I finally felt like I was doing something for me.
I rode on a learners and was racing,before I ever got my real license.I will always love this sport,long after I cant throw a leg over one.I've been blessed with some of the best seats in the house racing. I was never the fastest,but the names of racers I shared the track with over the years are my most valuable memories.Ive ridden with Haydens,Yates,Spies,God knows how many Valvoline riders,and several I can't remember.I can't put a price on those memories.
