haven’t had a bike since getting taken out on the freeway about 9 months ago. Hopefully getting an RC390 in the next month or two so I can head back to the track. I’ll be sure to get an easy up and banner made that says “Mongo killed road racing” and a cooler full of modelos so people know to come have a beer

Hey Acree, what happening with you? I've come full circle, back to my job I had during my motorcycle days before the Antarctica work.

Oh, it has been considered but they would likely frown on it because you know, it would kill the planet faster. LOL

I will say, it's crazy how many motorcycle guys have worked down there. I worked with a couple of guys I had several mutual friends with due to racing. One of them worked with AMA teams back when I was involved and was part of Muzzy's AMA team when I was with Grigg doing the Muzzy Raptors. We didn't remember each other but definitely crossed paths. Former AMA and LRRS guys (Del Giudice brothers) worked down there for awhile. There were others but I don't know specifics.

So tell us what it was like to live down there? How f..king cold was it? What if anything was done for fun? How long did you stay and what was the highest temp while you lived there?

The coldest ambient temp I experienced was around -60F, though I was in well below -100F windchills. South Pole utility tunnels and fuel arches were around -58F. They sucked for sure but at least it's a dry cold. LOL

I never wintered at South Pole but did 2 winters at McMurdo Station. Winters are fairly low key with only about 150 as compared to 700-800 during summer. For fun there's a gym for basketball, volleyball, etc. There are 3 bars though I didn't drink a lot down there due to my position (need to be sober for emergencies). I did get tore up on some Jameson at the South Pole for Christmas 2015. Those firefighters are a bad influence down there. They organize various trips around the stations during summer. In the summer there is a person deployed that organized recreational activities. You get to escort tourist that occasionally make it to McMurdo in the summer via ships. I did dive tender for a couple of Scripps Institute researchers that are doing marine biological studies. That was a cool break from the normal day.

As for the warmest, it was probably low 40s at McMurdo during the summer though usually in the summer it stays around freezing. 40s in McMurdo is light jacket weather. I joke about it being a dry cold but it definitely is noticeable at McMurdo. Of course when you start dropping below -20F it's just freaking cold. LOL
