Pirelli slick strange tire wear (rings around tire)

Discussion in 'Tech' started by Nick Iacovacci, Oct 17, 2021.

  1. 597972C7-E0D6-4311-8ACE-2656673F3611.jpeg I bought a brand new Pirelli Superbike SC2 rear and did one track day session on it. The tire wear looks like nothing I have ever seen. When I asked the Pirelli vendor who sold me the tires about it, he told me that it is normal. Does anyone have any ideas? My previous rear slick didn’t wear like this. Is it a faulty tire? Manufacturing issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You're seeing the construction of the tire. Looks very lightly used. A little more wear and it will go away.

    Where are you posting from?

  4. Thanks! Yeah they are very lightly used.

    I’m in Austin, TX!

Was it a “Pireli” you bought on eBay and shipped from Hong Kong?

Seriously though, looks a little weird but I haven’t run Pirellis a whole lot.

Obviously there's people in here who *actually* know what they're talking about, but the SC2s I've ran never had wear indicators like that either. Not saying it's a problem just different than what I've seen.

I was just watching the wsbk races and on some of the rear facing suspension/rear tire shots the pirellis have the same appearance. I think they were looking back from Rea's bike.

Pirelli has put new wear indicators of different depths all next to each other for new tires.

This is not a problem, it's the way the rubber was laid during construction. Just like the tire man says above :Poke:

Just run Dunlops- no more striped wear patterns.

FYI this is a 180/60 rear and for some reason the guys in the factory used this R&D mold for a short production run.

And if it doesn't go away get ahold of your tire guy.

Does the R&D mold have more wear markers so they can get more data?
