I was there 5-6 years ago during the Syrian invasion and it was great! Felt just a little edgy, but no problems at all, although there was a bombing near the blue mosque a couple days after we left, in a place where we walked. If you go, be sure to get down to Ephesus. Well worth the trouble.

 

I gotta say Cairo is probably the sketchiest large city I've visited. I just never feel entirely safe there.
