Rossi tests Schumacher's F2004 for the first time, and runs within 105% of the lap record: http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsArticle.jhtml?type=motorSportsNews&storyID=4898062§ion=news http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/3646929.stm -peekay
So that mean that Rossi is better than Jeff Gordon on 4 wheels? The sad part about this is that until Rossi is beat at MotoGP, who elses would be king? If Rossi leaves after he wins the 2004 Championship (if he wins in 2004) with Yamaha, what will he have to prove to himself? There will be no reason to stay (except for money) and the 2005 Champion will then have this cloud over his head. "You would not have won the Championship if Val was still here." Rossi leaving next year for F1 will only cheapen the series. MotoGP needs to think about their ace marketing tool. If Rossi does not win in 2004, he has a reason (as a racer) to stay for one more year.
But it looks POSSIBLE. Last years BMW was not that much lower than the RED car. Didn't Gordon get within 7 seconds of the lap record?
The reporting of Rossi's best lap time within 3 seconds and 105% of the lap record are inaccurate and a bit optimistic - Schumacher's best time in early season testing this year was 55.999 for the new record. Schumacher has turned 59's there on a wet/drying track. Rossi made a very good effort, but not quite as good as reported compared to the record.
