I was blown away when I saw this photo of the very first AMA Superbike Series race at Daytona in 1976. This is when the series officially launched as a national championship event and it was a photo finish between Steve McLaughlin and Reg Pridmore. Guess who the starter is!
Roger has it, he gave me a copy of that photo years ago. It has been on my shop wall for so long that it is all spattered and stained. FWIW, I knew all three guys in that photo. I worked on the BMW team when Pridmore and McLaughlin were riding, and worked with Al Wilcox as well as took many flags from him. Life is good. Sayonara, Al. You were a darned big little man.
Thanks Larry. Hey post Al on the rider files. I have been going through photos for a slide show for Al's Celebration of Life on April 1st at Summit Point Raceway with Motorcycle Xcitement and April 2 at the WERA races. Everyone is invited. Maybe that photo is the reason I ride a Daytona Orange 1976 BMW r90s.
Al Wilcox is one of those individuals you can never forget...indelibly etched in our hearts and souls forever. One a second note, I want to thank Roger Lyle for supporting Al so well for so many years. I must admit, if it weren't for Roger's regiment for Al, he might have left us years ago.
You didn't need to know Al Wilcox for more than five minutes to know exactly who he was. RIP my friend.
Some of you know me and some do not, But if not for Al Wilcox, I would have never continued Racing and never made AMA Expert and a little History at Daytona. Al is "Still the MAN"! in my book
Hey Vincent. I know you from the www.zrxoa.org Al knew so many in the race community, huh? Every single person who ever knew him loved him. Roger showed me that photo a few years ago. Roger and Al both had a big smile on their faces when they told me about that exciting race finish with Al waving the flag. RIP, Al.
