I'm sure it changes if you're into marketing and sales and such - first time I heard something referred to as a POS Display I rolled :D

In the collateral recovery biz POS 99.99% of the time means Piece of XXXXX. Adam Sandler even wrote a song about it!:D

Where I am POS usually refers to the cash register, bar codes, database etc. POP is all marketing material you see in a store.

My prior job was developing POS software. The suits called it Point of Sales, but POS meant something else to the rest of us.

in my line of work, i use both phrases in one. i hate working on the pieces of shiat point of sales equipment. mainly because it feels degrading after working on servers and large mainframes for 8 years.
