Picked up a first gen 3.5L Ecoboost, before they added port injection back in to clean the valves up. Been going through forum pictures of oil residue on the backs of valves and I'm feeling anxious. What's the deal here? Do I need to drop $400-600 on a catch can system? Do those spray in the intake carbon cleaners do anything?
why is the catch can so expensive? Does it utilize the PVC system? Got one for my subaru and it was ~$150 brand new.
Just take intake off and clean them every 80k. Btw they are now adding port inje tors again to resolve it in new ones.
I put a catch can on mine, drain it once a week in the winter, get a cup of fluid usually You might want to drill the intercooler too to allow the water to drain out
On my last BMW i installed a catch can (think it was about $150 or so) but it didn't really accumulate much oil. At 60k miles i had the intake side cleaned (walnut shell blasting). Here are the before and after pics.....
The car kept throwing a misfire code under hard acceleration so i had that and the coils done at the same time. It stopped the codes and it felt a bit more "crisp" on hard pulls.
How much did that run you? Are they pulling off the whole head to blast, or are they able to vacuum out the walnut shells after?
Just take off the intake. It cost about $450 and they replaced the oil filter housing gasket while they were in there.
Is that like a circle earth grounding kit? It has 100k mi on it now, no misfires or anything (yet). I might just do this CRC intake tract cleaner every oil change and hope for the best. https://www.amazon.com/CRC-05319-Intake-Valve-Cleaner/dp/B00PHNQKR2
Use good quality synthetic oil, if your vehicle requires premium fuel make sure to put premium in it and from time to time stomp that thing! This is how we drive wifes Lexus with DI. I heard all kind of carbon horror stories from guy's I know that worked on them. I changed spark plugs at 90k and decided to check carbon on valves, I found very little carbon and was able to clean it all with PB blaster and toothbrush...
Is your Lexus turbo though? Even though all motors have had PCV since the 60s, oil blowby is greatly increased in forced induction. Everything does, except for bikes and lawn mowers.
