Air Force 1 security when in the air.

How or what security measures are in place when AF1 flys to different countries. Watching it land in Rome today and the tv had a mega zoom lens on it that followed it for several minutes on its approach. It just seemed like a sitting duck.

Do other countries allow US fighter jets to fly with it.
Do other countries have their fighter jets do escort duty.
Who is responsible for the in flight security.

    Any insight.

I don't know. It just seemed from watching it come in that I would have to think some nut job group would be plotting something. Didn't we give thousands of stinger missiles out in the 1980s. You would think I few of those are still around somewhere.

You kidding me? Those stingers got shot off within half an hour, like rednecks on the 4th of July. :D

I would guess that AF1 has defensive shit that the public has never even heard of. It might be possible to pull something, but I suspect it would take something far more (or possibly less?) sophisticated than an '80s era Stinger.

They fly a halo around the aircraft at all times in all countries. By this I mean they use fully armed fighters supported by tankers to fly overwatch along the AF1 route. Additionally, AF1 is armed with air to air missiles, flairs, and radar jamming equipment. This combined with the huge no fly zone around the aircraft keeps it pretty safe.

Fyi: this is just what I was told by a friend who might know (he could be FOS).

It was my understanding that they never rely on allied protection.

Not sure about any always in-air support, but every time AF1 came by our base, we had aircraft loaded with live munitions on stand-by.

I remember watching a post 911 documentary that chronicled the events that happened just after the second tower got hit. They got President Bush up in AF1 ASAP then flew four or so f-16s out of NY. The only thing is they never specifically informed the F16 pilots what or who they were meeting up with. They were only given coordinates and then when they met the coordinates to provide escort cover etc. I think they maintained radio silence as well.

In the documentary the F16 pilots said they had no idea until they got close and then saw AF1 and then they new what the deal was. It was really cool. They even interviewed President Bush who recalled looking out and seeing the F16s and what and how it made him feel. Etc.

Lawn Dart Difficult. With a big D.

It does not have offensive capability. Whenever AF1 flies, alert crews are put on standby, including the E-4B which is always relatively close (and I mean in hours, not in formation), and is a much more capable military aircraft. I've never known it to fly with fighter escorts, but I'd imagine they're not terribly far away, in international airspace, with tankers and such.

From my bit of knowledge, the entire entourage is preceded by advance teams of security staff and White House Communications, which ensures there's proper capability to reach back to the U.S. if needed. Some of the guys I worked with were on White House Comm duty, occasionally. Then there's the logistics of flying in the limo and other security vehicles. Last I remember, they were using the C-17 Globemaster to send all that stuff ahead. It's usually there ahead of them...

So, advanced teams and equipment, AF1, then E-4B follows behind, with alert crews in the air, or on standby.

They didn't talk about NAOC/E-4B/Doomsday plane, did they?

So much shit before it lands. Especially oconus.
It's got some serious counter measures on it and I think some fire power.
Plus it's never alone. Trust that.

There are waaaaaay easier targets than that bad boy. The bubble around it is also pretty massive.
