So a local guy is selling his 2008 Tuono with 14k miles. Has most of the "R" model upgrades like forks and wheels and also appears to have the dual Leo Vince slip ons (titanium w/ carbon tips). He's asking $4k and negotiable in person within reason. I don't need another bike but I have always wanted one. Anything I should look/listen for when I check it out? I feel like I have only heard good things about this model. Appreciate the insights...

You should, if you decide not to let me know since I am looking for one!

I haven't been tracking prices, so can't comment, but a bit under $4k sounds fairly reasonable. Check for a leaky clutch slave cylinder. Not an expensive fix if it is leaking, as you can clean it up and replace the seal. Just a bit of a messy job. I replaced cylinder with the Oberon aftermarket part and no issues since. Plus, it looks cooler in the red aluminum.

If it does have the R forks and the rear shock is still the stock Sachs one, do yourself a favor and replace the shock with an Ohlins to balance the bike out. Mine rode and handled significantly better after that upgrade. I am not sure Ohlins is making them anymore, so you might have to find a used one. Keep the bike on a tender if you don't ride it a lot, as it does have a decent amount of parasitic power drain on the battery for some reason. If you are riding it around town and twisties more than track and wide-open interstate, go down 1 tooth on the front sprocket if not already done. In fact, that works for most tracks too.

They're cool bikes. My buddy had one and we traded for a few hours. He rode my Monster 900 and I rode his Tuono. I felt the Aprilia was a smoother more refined feeling Monster. Similar riding position and handling, just different power delivery.
    A) The answer to should I buy another bike is always YES.
    B) At that price, you won't lose much if anything if you decide it's not the one for you.
    Do it.

I just bought an '08 this past spring. I have an '05, and was surprised at the difference. Much more refined. The power is very different, with it being biased more towards the upper revs. Ditto on the slave cylinder, and also stator goes out on these things fairly regularly. It would be nice to have a little bit more wind protection. Parts are not easy to find sometimes.

Do it but buy a pillow for your butt because the seat feels like a piece of plywood after about 10 minutes. Lots of wheelies everywhere and frequent trips to the gas station but more fun than you ever imagined was possible riding a street bike

That seems like a killer price. I've seen them going more in the $5k region and more for clean ones.
And yes, you should buy it.

Must be your butt, as everyone who's ridden mine is surprised how comfy it is. Now my '05 is a torture rack... Mine was super clean with 8k miles, and new tires, and I paid $4700. Also be aware that the tank decals will bubble up at some point. Nothing much you can do about it, but most people put knee pads to cover the worst spots.

Can't turn down a deal on a Tuono. Great bike for in the mountains and some track days.
